What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our planet is at a crossroads. Centuries of exploiting our natural resources has led to climate instability and gaping socioeconomic inequalities. Greenstand recognizes that planting and growing trees can mitigate the effects of climate change and alleviate extreme poverty. In recent years, this concept has gained traction and tree planting initiatives have become increasingly trendy. However, these operations tend to lack transparency; neither donors nor organizations can verify that their tree has been planted, where it is located, or if it even survives the vulnerable seedling stage. Unfortunately “plant-and-forget” is the current norm, which Greenstand seeks to disrupt while implementing a new green standard. Trees have immense ecological value at the local level and on a global scale. This value can be truly realized by the creation of an economy based on environmental restoration. However, we currently lack a mechanism to do so. This is where tracking trees comes into play.

Context Notes

This number reflects Treetracker users who are registered in our system. Please note that some of these users are village coordinators who share their Treetracker accounts with multiple tree growers.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our mission is two-fold, based on the technology we build and the tree growers we serve. In terms of tech, we strive to establish an ISO standard and best practices for tree growth verification. We have created an open-source model that can be replicated and used throughout the tree planting sector.

Today trees are being planted at an unprecedented rate on the land of the poorest people on the planet - meanwhile these communities, whose primary skill sets are farm and agriculture based, struggle to feed themselves daily. Greenstand has created a system that provides an avenue for sustainable compensation for actually keeping trees alive, not just planting them.

We care deeply about the well-being of the growers that use the Treetracker app. By planting and caring for trees, growers are directly healing the ecosystems that they depend on for survival and decreasing their own risk of exposure to environmental health hazards. In addition to the myriad environmental benefits to planting and growing trees— including enhanced soil health, protection of biodiversity, and carbon sequestration— growers can generate sustainable income for their stewardship. We imagine a world where entire communities can lift themselves out of extreme poverty by planting and growing trees. And Greenstand is creating technology to help achieve this goal.

Our Treetracker app facilitates a digital chain of custody of trees and their co-benefits. Data on these trees, including their location, species, and health, is captured by individual users, enabling Greenstand to track and compensate for the incremental growth of a tree. By facilitating payments to tree growers and engaging with system users, we are able to gauge our socioeconomic impact on a per-tree basis.

Our team has developed a full software stack that has been tested during an East Africa pilot program. The Treetracker successfully creates and maintains said chain of custody, establishing a digital link between donors and tree growers. In addition, our token-trading API allows for trees’ impact to be owned and traded in a global environmental credit market via user wallets.

Greenstand has completed a successful pilot program in East Africa. We are ready to begin moving into the scale phase of the Treetracker project. We have already verified over 750,000 trees, allowing the system to create nearly 130,000 Impact Tokens that signify the social and environmental impact of each tree.

In early 2020, we completed our token trading API, which allows for Impact Tokens to be stored in a mobile wallet and traded on our platform.

In March 2020 the Treetracker platform was used for a World Bank funded tree inventory tracking project demonstrating the versatility of the platform.

Since July 2020 we have been working closely with the City Council of Freetown, Sierra Leone and have adapted our stewardship model for the urban context. This community planting initiative, which is currently halfway to 1 million, was supported by the World Bank.

In line with the creation of a forest economy, Greenstand is additionally developing a tree value matrix to calculate impacts of trees and assign a relative value, as well as designing a mechanism to measure trees’ carbon sequestration rates.
