What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our main challenge is educating the Colombian public to care about farm animals and street dogs. There is a general ignorance around the meaning of a sanctuary and a lack of understanding of the benefits of a plant-based diet. Our project, therefore, aims to teach equality of all beings through practice and precept -- rescuing some animals and providing medical care for others, as well as doing educational programs, including vegan advocacy, free vegan cooking workshops, and distribution of literature.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Animal Rescue

We take in animals that have been abadoned or abused and give them the medical care they need and a safe home.

Population(s) Served
Adults

In cooperation with the Food Yoga Academy, we plan to introduce Meat-free Monday into selected schools around Bogota.

The government has an office called ICBF (Instituto Colombiano d Bienestar familiar) that provides education and food to schools with children from families with a low income. These children are from 3 to 7 years old. This office provides money to feed them 5 times at day. Each of the schools decides what they want to cook, but the government has to approve the menu in consultation with expert nutritionists.

The Food Yoga Academy plans to hire professionals with expertise in plant-based nutrition to serve as consultants on this project and along with endorsements and the backing of successful Meat-free Monday campaigns in schools throughout Europe.

Population(s) Served

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Equality for all beings - establishing equal rights to all animals in Colombia and educating and inspiring the public to enforce these rules. We also aspire to increase the number of people abstaining from all meat and dairy products so that the meat and dairy industry is forced to seek better practices and, ideally, new business models.

Education and example of kindness and compassion for all animals.

Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary is committed to providing quality care for the rescued animals under our care. This care comes in the form of proper shelters, fencing, security, nutritious meals, and medical care.

We will continue rescuing more animals as our budget and facilities permit.

Along with setting an example of quality care, we will expand our education services to include more school tours, interaction with the animals, and education materials for free distribution.

We have the capacity to do many programs here but are currently lacking funds to expand these projects. At the moment we are reaching a few thousand people a year, but our goal is to reach millions in person and virtually.

We have rescued over 1000 animals to date and educated over 50,000 people and currently care for 300 animals at the sanctuary.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
