What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Each year in the U.S., families of more than 15,000 children age 0-19 will hear the words your child has cancer. Across all ages, ethnic groups, and socioeconomic statuses, this disease remains the number one cause of death by disease in children. In the last 40 years, the overall survival rate for childhood cancer has increased from 10% to over 85%. But for rarer childhood cancers, the survival rate remains much lower. Furthermore, the number of diagnosed cases annually has not declined in nearly 20 years. Childhood cancer treatment is incredibly brutal--the anxiety and mental anguish during and following treatment palpable. Losing your child, despite your deepest hope and best efforts to save them is a traumatic event in a family's life, one that can easily lead to complicated mental and physical health issues, relationship and work strain, and the loss of a sense of self or purpose. Rett's Roost's vision is to cultivate a community of healing and hope for these families.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Positively Healing Retreats

Our free retreats are open to families that have a child transitioning off of cancer treatment and those that have lost a child to cancer. We create a peaceful, joyful, empathetic space for families to relax and honor themselves and their child after months or years of hospitalization sometimes ending in death. We focus on mindful, positive living through healthy bodies, community, and spiritual openness (whatever that may be for you).

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Rett's Roost offers thoughtful and therapeutic programs that connect parents and children with others that have been through similar traumatic and tragic circumstances--caretaking a child through cancer treatment, and in many cases, losing that child to their disease. One of our goals is to give children with cancer and their families a joyful respite after months or years of hospital visits and worry. Our second priority is to bring grieving families together in an effort to reduce the overwhelming feeling of loneliness that accompanies child loss. We've found that the connections made through our immersive and intimate programs are lasting and essential.

At our free healing retreats and joyful social gatherings, we honor one another's difficult journeys and the children that have suffered, and offer therapeutic ways to cope through moments of stress, grief, and isolation. We encourage holistic healing of the body, mind, and spirit through integrative therapies, psychosocial support, movement, massage, energy work, creativity, and mindfulness toward the natural and spiritual world. All aspects of Rett's Roost programs are based on equitable, inclusive, nondenominational principles that ensure families have a safe, relaxing, and healing experience.

Retts Roost achieves its mission and strives for their vision by:

Providing free, healing retreats; joyful social gatherings; end-of-life support; and virtual services for families affected by cancer and child loss.
Offering integrative therapeutic support for the whole family, including siblings and parents.
Creating a community of families with similar tragic stories of cancer and loss.
Encouraging healing of the mind, body, and spirit through various integrative therapies, peer connections, self-care habits, body and energy work, and mindfulness toward the natural and spiritual world.
Advocating and increasing public awareness about the prevalence, treatment, and research of all types of childhood cancer.
Collaborating with existing nonprofit organizations to increase overall effectiveness in supporting families impacted by childhood cancer and child loss.
Cultivating a sustainable organization through donor and grantor relationships and community business support.
Carrying forth the above functions of Retts Roost without discriminating against any person or organization because of race, age, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or religious belief.
