Surviving Suicidal Thoughts
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
An estimated 10 million American adults seriously consider suicide in a given year - 3 million make suicide plans and 1 million attempt suicide. People who die by suicide are seen in health systems - nearly 50% visited a healthcare provider in the month before their death, mostly for visits to primary care. However, healthcare providers have few resources and little training to support patients at risk for suicide. NowMattersNow.org was developed to support providers, but also as a resource for suicidal people on the internet who are not connected to care.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We want healthcare systems to utilize our free online and evidence-based resources to support their patients at risk for suicide, as well as those experiencing addiction (e.g., opioid) and mental health challenges.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We write grants to evaluate our website and the resources on the website. We share video-based content on social media and video-hosting platforms. We maintain a list of over 800 email and text followers. We have created a "safety plan" to download and personalize using an accompanying guide - this tool helps users to determine what steps to take to manage and prevent suicidal thoughts, unwanted drug use, and painful emotions.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are entirely volunteer. As needed, we hire employees for work such as statistical analyses and grant writing support. Our space and resources are donated.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We've reached nearly 300,000 people through our website, and connected more than 15,000 people to counselors through text messaging support collaboration with the Crisis Text Line. Research shows that visits to our website are associated with significant reductions in suicidal thoughts in as little as 8 minutes on the website, even for those rating their suicidal thoughts as completely overwhelming. Our resource (the NowMattersNow.org website) was developed in collaboration with individuals with lived experience. Our work has been presented at various national and international academic conferences. We've been referenced in the New York Times, Huffington Post, National Public Radio, CBS Sunday Morning News, Men's Health Magazine, and other organizations.
