The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Symposiums are a series of community-based steel guitar workshops and courses are held at various venues throughout the State of Hawai‘i and elsewhere throughout the year. The symposiums are presented to promote and perpetuate Hawaiian music and culture with specific emphasis on learning to play the Hawaiian steel guitar. No prior experience is necessary.

The purpose of the symposiums is to make available learning opportunities for those individuals wanting to expand their knowledge of the Hawaiian steel guitar, enhance their playability, or learn playing techniques from steel guitar masters. These symposiums may be targeted to various learning groups and are conducted by steel guitar masters who are known throughout the State of Hawai‘i and are expert in sharing their knowledge and playing techniques with others. The symposiums provide live instruction in an intimate learning environment where student and teacher can interact freely.

Children and youth

Livestream Steel Guitar Saturdays feature two steel guitar masters in concert along with prerecorded videos of NextGen steel guitarists in a two-hour live program. Some showcases include a Virtual Kanikapila where viewers can play along with Showcase musicians during the broadcast's third hour. Kanikapila songs will be selected from the "Blue Book" – He Mele Aloha, and the book's key will be used wherever possible.

The Livestream Kanikapila Showcase features two hours of live virtual kanikapila instead of steel guitar performances.Guests are invited to select their favorite instrument and play along with the all-star band.

The Open Stage Showcase features prerecorded videos submitted by amateur and professional steel guitarists worldwide, performing selections of their choice. This provides an opportunity for steel guitarists to present their uncompensated performances for viewing by a worldwide audience.
