What we aim to solve
Keepers of the Kern want to continue to address the excessive trash, garbage, human waste and graffiti that are clogging the Wild and Scenic Kern River, Isabella and the land surrounding them. We have been volunteers/partners with the U.S. Forest Service, going on 8 years and assist them in maintaining and managing the river corridor, lake and other areas on the Sequoia National Forest. The increase in visitors has presented a monumental problem that appears insurmountable in this unusual, and trying season. We wish to do all we can to continue to educate the public on proper actions to take when recreating. The Adopt A Campground project which has been a successful project for 7 years is one we will do all we can to make sure it continues. This project took a big hit this year due to Covid19 and the drop in the economy, as did our fundraisers and donations received. We are working hard to stay on top of it all.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Clean Up Events
Keepers holds regular weekly clean up events on the upper Wild and Scenic Kern River; bi monthly on Isabella Lake, Keyesville Recreation Areas and as often as possible on the lower Kern River.
The purpose is to remove all or as much as feasibly possible of trash, garbage, and human waste from the waters edge into the campgrounds.
We measure our clean up programs by observing the areas before and after, we monitor areas on a regular basis and have found that many visitors are becoming aware of the fact that keeping a campground clean is their responsibility.
These clean up events serve ALL who recreate on the river and the lake, by have a cleaner and safer area to have the outdoors experience.
Community Programs
Keepers of the Kern join local organizations to present our programs to them and keep them up to date on events and activities. Power Point projects give members a good look at what exactly takes place when visitors and locals are irresponsible with trash, garbage, human waste and graffiti. Before and after photographs are shared along with a question and answer period to offer more information, including budgets and financial. We also participate in school programs along with the U.S. Forest Service, to give students the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ learning experiences on the importance of caring for the environment. Field trips are encouraged and have been very successful in the past, as many young people have not been exposed to the hazards of improper habits when camping or on a river or trail. Fire prevention is also part of teaching young people the importance of how to build, manage and put a campfire out the correct way. Another very popular and important project is taking the youth to a Native American cultural site and introducing them to the many native plants, their uses and showing them how the people lived here in this area thousands of years a

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Keepers of the Kern will actively pursue necessary changes to take place to reduce the capacity, increase management programs, reduce the amount of abuse which is taking place. We will continue to work with the managing agency to find solutions to the problems increased capacity has brought about. We are looking forward to the coming year in hopes it brings an increase in volunteers, sponsors, grants and donations in order for us to keep a stable financial situation. It is our intent to grow our out reach programs to media and organizations outside our geographical area to increase the scope of sharing information about the problems and accomplishments which take place.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We will actively move forward with 'brainstorming' meetings with the U.S. Forest Service, our community and elected officials to make the changes which are necessary to bring the health and safety back to our public lands. Our plan is to have a team of volunteers make personal contact with the visiting public and to be more active in education. Our volunteer base needs to be increased, even though we have had a very satisfactory increase over the last few months, it are volunteers that make this all happen. An increase in social media information sharing is taking place to increase awareness of what is taking place. Visibility and setting an example is a major impact on how visitors act and react to situations, which in turn bring about changes in attitudes and actions. Keepers will reach out to sponsors and donors to bring about a more workable budget in order to make it possible to allow our directions and projects to increase.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The capabilities for Keepers to be able to reach our goals and increase our accomplishments are in the hands of our volunteers, community, sponsors, donors and the agency that manages the land. We will push forward with solution solving programs, increase our volunteer base, add to the information which goes out to the public and support the ideas and suggestions received from all involved. Keepers has a voice in what is happening and we will continue to have that voice and use what we have learned in 8 years to make a difference.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our accomplishments are many...First and foremost, we have been able to accomplish a successful 8 years in bringing about changes, reducing abuse and negligence. We have been able to maintain a workable, useful relationship with the managing agency by holding regular monthly meetings to finalize plans, make new ones, work on solutions and hold them responsible for doing what is mandated in the Wild and Scenic River Act. We were instrumental in having many areas on the upper Kern changed to Day Use or No Camping areas in order to afford more protection for the river corridor. The Adopt A Campground project is one of our major accomplishments and has been successful for 7 years. The additional sanitary facilities it provides has and will continue to make a very large impact on the reduction of camping debris and human waste being left on the river, land and campgrounds. Keepers were awarded one of three National Wild and Scenic River Steward award. We are humbled by this recognition and proud to have been able to make a difference big enough to receive it. What's next...We will push on and use our voice, knowledge, and experience to make sure the Kern River receives the protection it is worthy of.
