DEMOCRACY IN PRACTICE

aka Democracia En Práctica   |   Baldwinsville, NY   |  www.democracyinpractice.org

Mission

We believe that underlying many of today's social, economic, and environmental problems are approaches to democracy that are exclusive, unrepresentative, and ineffective. In order to address these collective problems, we believe we first need to think beyond elections and develop better ways to do democracy.

Our mission is to transform how people envision democracy, and to develop innovative ways for even the largest organizations, communities, and governments to be truly democratic—not just in theory or in name, but in practice.

Notes from the nonprofit

In our efforts to transform democracy, we push ourselves to operate as democratically as possible. For this reason, our organization is structured in a unique way that we believe makes it more democratic, agile, and transparent than many traditionally structured non-profit organizations. We are incorporated in the State of New York, and as allowed by New York non-profit law we have no single "leader", no president or CEO, and instead our team works together as equals and makes important organizational decisions through consensus. Similarly, as allowed by New York law, our Board of Directors has no Chair and instead roles are rotated among all directors. To ensure that decisions are made by those who will be most impacted by those decisions (i.e. those doing the work), all permanent members of our team must be directors of the organization and serve on the Board and all members of the Board of Directors must be active members of our team engaged in everyday work. In this way, we see ourselves as a worker-run non-profit organization.

Guidestar provides limited flexibility for such an innovative organizational structure, as such we are required to provide names of "co-leaders" and "co-chairs", even though our organization does not have these formal positions/titles. Following Guidestar's suggestions, we randomly selected directors of our organization to fill these fields and will rotate different directors yearly. Similarly, although it unfortunately makes our organization appear less accountable on Guidestar, given that we have no president/CEO we cannot in good faith check the box that states that we conduct a yearly written evaluation of the president/CEO. We do conduct team evaluations, and part of our approach to accountability and oversight is decentralizing power in our organization throughout the team so as to not place a great deal of power and responsibility in the hands of a single leader figure. Also, given that all members of our Board are actively engaged in the day-to-day work, we feel we are better able to oversee each others' actions and hold one another accountable. Ours is not the typical Board of Directors that has limited inside insight and must resort to other measures to oversee daily operations.

Additionally, although we are actively striving to make our organization more diverse, our principles and structure restrict our ability to simply add diversity to our Board of Directors without dramatically impacting our team and our day-to-day work (to become a director one must also become a permanent member of our team). Thus, while in the long-run we are working to build a more diverse team and thus a more diverse Board, in the short-run we do our best to incorporate diversity through our Board of Advisors and through volunteers.

Please find more details about our organization's innovative structure in our bylaws, which are available in our Guidestar profile.

Student-Powered Democratic Experimentation

This initiative is transforming the way schools approach civic education by facilitating student experimentation with innovative ways to structure student government. Elections, full-year terms, and hierarchy have been replaced with random selection, rotation, and horizontal teams, making student government more inclusive, representative, and engaging. Through experimentation, students also begin to think critically and creatively about fundamentally better ways to approach democracy. Now in its third year in Bolivia, this initiative provides an alternative to the exclusion and disengagement that typically characterize student government, and a way to develop active citizens with strong civic skills and democratic values.

Population(s) Served

In order to contribute to existing knowledge regarding democratic innovation in its many forms, Democracy In Practice engages in research activities on its own as well as in collaboration with various universities, institutes, and organizations. These research activities include conducting formal and informal assessments of Democracy In Practice’s own projects, the contexts in which they operate, and the experiences of participants. Formal research occurs in collaboration with researchers at various universities. The knowledge generated through this research is intended to benefit any groups or communities who themselves wish to be more democratic and to be available to others interested in a diversity of democratic practices. Accordingly, research findings are freely distributed through a variety of mediums, including through open access platforms and free reports made available on the organization's website. Given the international collaboration involved (which includes researchers abroad), these activities may take place at different stages (e.g. data collection, analysis, synthesis and writing) in various locations, namely Bolivia, the United States, and Canada. In one form or another, these activities occur on a continual basis.

Population(s) Served

Democracy In Practice is expanding its work beyond schools to work alongside organizations and community groups who are seeking to be more inclusive, representative and effective in their self-governance. Democracy In Practice will consult with such groups and advise them regarding organizational practices that will allow for the more democratic participation of their members. In addition to advising, Democracy In Practice will provide capacity-building workshops as well as adopt a facilitating role in organizing the groups’ use of various democratic practices.

Population(s) Served

In order to further public awareness of – and knowledge about – a diversity of democratic practices and initiatives, Democracy In Practice acts as a central, publicly-available resource for information and news regarding both the organization's own work with innovative democratic practices as well as other innovative democratic initiatives such as Citizens’ Juries and Participatory Budgeting. This occurs through a variety of channels, including social media, Democracy In Practice's website, interviews, conferences, and other avenues; in one form or another, it occurs on a continuous basis, and occurs online as well as in conferences in the Americas and Europe.
