HOUSING PROVIDERS OF HAWAII INC
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We meet the construction and building needs for Hawaii's homeless service providers. With limited funds, aging facilities, and limited housing options, HomeAid Hawaii helps non-profit homeless service providers improve their facilities or construct new ones. By donating services, materials, or labor from professional licensed members in the building industry, we save the service provider in construction costs. Our building industry members learn first hand about the issue of homelessness, and make a direct impact to help end it.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We hope to reduce construction, renovation, and facility maintenance costs for homeless service providers. By doing this, we help providers direct more of their funding toward programs and helping clients end their circumstance of homelessness. We help homeless service providers end homelessness for hundreds of their clients by assisting them with construction and building related needs. In our outreach program, we host events and activities that address aspects of homelessness and bring awareness to the general public.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have three programs we use to accomplish our goals: housing, outreach, and advocacy.
Our housing program provides pro-bono and deeply discounted construction or building related services and materials to qualified non-profit homeless service providers. We bring the construction costs down for nonprofits so they can focus their limited resources on programs for their clients. We work closely with local homeless service providers to understand and identify their needs and how our professional services can best help them.
Our outreach program allows us flexibility to perform duties related to homelessness outside of construction. We have partnered with other service providers for special events, sponsored conferences, attended conferences and task force meetings. We build relationships with our community nonprofit providers that help identify where we can fill gaps or assist them. We have a hygiene and comfort kit program that collects items and distributes them to shelters on an ongoing basis. We have an annual Christmas program that provides meals, gifts, shelter, and a night of special entertainment for homeless youth. We rely on creative and innovative ideas to outreach providers and people experiencing homelessness, and we hope to make trans-formative differences through their experience with us.
Advocacy is where we support our industry partners: both building and nonprofit service providers. HomeAid Hawaii is uniquely positioned to understand the world of housing development and homelessness.....the two ends of any housing spectrum. Advocacy provides education, awareness, and conversation.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our board of directors is comprised of leading builders on Oahu, Hawaii. We rely on our board to provide support from building industry members who are interested in working on HomeAid Hawaii housing projects. We can provide anything from flooring, paint, furniture, appliances, bathroom and kitchen remodels, new construction, and architectural support. If it's in the building industry, you can ask us for help, and trust that professional work will be done. All companies and people who work on our projects are licensed professionals in Hawaii, we do not use volunteer labor with no experience.
Along with the building industry relationships our board members bring, our Executive Director has a background of 15 years in public policy and 10 years in nonprofit work. She has relationships on all sides of the aisle and conversation. We are in an excellent position to engage nonprofit service providers and government partners to maximize our potential.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the two and a half years since launching our housing program we have 11 housing projects that have been completed or are in development. Our housing projects have helped serve or shelter almost 1500 people on Oahu. The amount of services and materials we have donated to nonprofit homeless service providers is approximately $500,000. On average, our housing projects have been 99% pro-bono to the homeless service provider we are helping.
We continue to accept applications on a rolling basis, and we have every intention to pick up speed, not slow down. We'd like to build new housing options and facilities that create new beds. We are hopeful that more opportunities will arise for homeless service providers to lease land and facilities on a long term basis so that we can help with this.
