What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Start Giving Local addresses 2 key problems: 1) Mental Health Support: Although people are more globally connected than ever before in history there is a growing problem with loneliness, depression and anxiety. Through our participation in fun runs, marathons, cycling events and other social nonprofit sponsored activities we hope to connect individuals from across communities to a larger connected network of people with shared interests and goals. 2) Community Well Being: Wealth disparity, health care access, and preventable disease have a significant impact on individual and community wellness. We create programming that helps individuals live high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death. This helps support healthier more sustainable communities.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Start Giving Local Volunteer Athlete Training Program

Our Volunteer Athlete Training Program is designed to connect, inspire & empower individuals fundraising for charity through their participation in endurance sports.

Unlike most Endurance Fundraising Programs our sponsored athletes have no fundraising minimum threshold and are provided with comprehensive fundraising tools and support. All athletes running on the Start Giving Local team have the ability to choose to represent a second charity partner organization and to fundraise to directly support their program efforts. We believe that by eliminating fundraising minimums and enabling individuals to leverage every race as a fundraising channel, we will create a more diverse and consistent volunteer athlete community.

Population(s) Served
Adults
Economically disadvantaged people

The Thrive program was launched to combat the continuing disparity in financial opportunity access in the US. Federal Reserve data indicates that as of Q4 2021, the top 1% of households in the United States held 32.3% of the country's wealth, while the bottom 50% held 2.6%. In recent decades, wealth inequality has substantially increased in the United States.

At Start Giving Local we believe that positively shifting the wealth gap begins with empowering historically underfunded/ underemployed community members. The Thrive program accomplishes this goal by providing educational, career development, and business support services for historically underestimated job seekers and entrepreneurs.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Through our programming we are creating an actionable path to bridge the health and wealth divide.

We believe access to opportunity, connection, and well-being are fundamental to successful communities.

We bring people with shared interests and common goals together to amplify achievement, reduce isolation, and support individual & community wellness.

Our philanthropic programs and technology solutions support community well being by:
- Connecting individuals and inspiring community through wellness, sport & fitness
- Providing inclusive opportunities to career paths for community members that have historically been underemployed
-Providing inclusive educational & business support for historically underfunded founders

We are a team of volunteers with collective personal and professional expertise in entrepreneurship, endurance sports, digital marketing, corporate development, and social work. We have a deep personal connection to bridging the gaps and inefficiencies we see in the current philanthropic and community giving space. Our volunteers are personally connected to our mission and leverage their personal expertise and passion to help advance our team progress.

We are committed to building a transparent nonprofit that leverages the innovations that technology enables without losing sight of the importance of personal community relationships.

Start Giving Local officially received 501(C)3 status on May 10th of 2019 since that time we have achieved countless organizational firsts and in spite of a challenging quarantine period in 2020 and 2021, we are thrilled to share that we have created repeating annual programs that have helped us achieve significant measurable community outcomes. These include:

Annual Miles for Meaning Challenge
Community Action Drive (resulted in over 1500 community care-kits being distributed)
Thrive Program
