Ensuring Dignity for Holocaust Survivors
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
KAVOD's mission is to provide aid to Holocaust Survivors who have emergency day to day needs for food, medicine and/or household goods. We serve Holocaust Survivors living at or below the poverty line in the United States. KAVOD is designed to make sure these men and women live out their remaining years with dignity and respect by issuing aid in the form of gift cards to grocery stores and pharmacies near where they live. KAVOD works with agencies that are already serving Survivors in order to connect with these individuals in a strictly confidential basis. It has been estimated in 2024 by The Claims Conference that there are approximately 38,400 Survivors living in the United States and that 30-35% of them are living at or near poverty levels. It is unconscionable and unacceptable that these courageous people, whove endured so much already, are living their remaining years without basic necessities.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
KAVOD

The decisions of KAVOD are overseen by a diverse and experienced Board of Community Leaders with the majority being 2nd Generation or children of Holocaust Survivors.
KAVOD SHEF (Survivors of Holocaust Emergency Fund) Initiative
Recent studies indicate that 80,000 Holocaust Survivors are living today in the United States—and more than 30,000 are living at or near poverty. The support these Survivors receive does not allow them to afford what is needed to live a dignified life. Many are choosing between heat or food, medicine or rent.
Recognizing the importance of reaching any Survivor regardless of where he or she lives, Seed the Dream Foundation partnered with KAVOD to establish the KAVOD Survivors of the Holocaust Emergency Fund (SHEF) in 2019. KAVOD SHEF exponentially multiplies the dollars and vital services directly reaching Survivors. Leveraging the funds raised through a special philanthropic national matching initiative, KAVOD SHEF works with 34 communities across the United States to bring millions of additional dollars to the Survivor community.
100% of KAVOD SHEF matching funds raised are directed toward Emergency Services for Survivors and allocated through KAVOD.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
When forming our organization, we learned that although there are organizations offering aid, it is usually a complicated and frustrating process for the Survivor and it takes a long time to receive support. When it comes to emergency needs like groceries and medicine, they simply cannot wait. This is the gap we found in the process and made the commitment to fill the gap.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We will continue reaching out to Service Agencies that serve Holocaust Survivors to understand the need and we will continue raising dollars to fulfill those needs until there are no Survivors living.
It is also part of our mission to educate on the subject matter of the Holocaust and advocate on behalf of the Survivors struggling with day to day basic needs. We speak to groups, both adults and students. We are committed to bringing the issue to light with the hope to create more relief for these individuals while there is still time.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a small organization with many partners. We have an active board and we have a seamless process to limit red tape. We are determined to continue this work until it is not needed anymore. We are passionate about the subject and find it our responsibility to advocate on the Survivors behalf.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
When we began in the fall of 2015, our goals were small. We felt if we could impact one Survivor we were doing our job.
Combining the end of 2015 with all of 2016, we raised approximately $25,000 and distributed around $14,000 in aid. in 2017, we raised approximately $54,000 and distributed close to $54,000! Our goal for 2018 was to double our impact in 2017. At the close of 2018 we raised over $160,000 and gave over $100,000 which exceeded our goal!
2019 brought a new partnership with Seed The Dream Foundation and together we co-created the KAVOD SHEF Initiative. This Initiative has exponentially increased the dollars and impact for Holocaust Survivors struggling with unmet Emergency needs!
Over the last 5 years ( our pilot year of 2019 and 2020) we have filled over 90,000 Emergency requests and we are continuing our work with both The KAVOD SHEF Initiative and The KAVOD Project in 2024 with over 42 community partnerships. Through this effort, over $30 Million dollars have been brought into this space for Emergency Services for Holocaust Survivors!
We will continue along this path for the Holocaust Survivors with the hope to relieve their struggles at the end of their lives. They have experienced enough!

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
