protecting and providing clean water worldwide

What we aim to solve
CLEAN International addresses waterborne illness and the lack of access to sustainable, affordable and convenient clean water and sanitation for billions around the world. Worldwide, 1 in 9 people or approximately 884 million do not have access to clean water and over 200 million are walking over 4 miles per day to collect water. Approximately 2.6 billion, 1 in 3 people, do not have access to sanitation, with millions still practicing open defecation. Due to these numbers, over 50% of the world's illness are caused by unclean water. At the same time, an increasing number of regions throughout the world are experiencing water scarcity or water stress. Through our focus on sustainable, community-driven solutions, CLEAN International is protecting water through conservation, restoration and tree planting while at the same time providing new access to sustainable clean water in communities in need worldwide.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Clean Water and Sanitation
CLEAN International mobilizes and evaluates innovative, environmentally sustainable solutions to water and sanitation in order to protect global water sources and improve the quality of life, overall health, and educational and economic opportunities of individuals worldwide.
Access to Water and Sanitation
CLEAN works alongside HTS Congo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Agua Para el Pueblo in Honduras, Spouts of Water in Uganda, Wachalal medical clinic in Guatemala, SayTrees in India, One More Salary in Tanzania, Pure Home Water in Ghana, Water Watch Penang in Malaysia and more to implement sustainable water systems, water saving technology, water conservation, filters, sanitation and hygiene in communities in need.
Ecofiltros in Guatemala
CLEAN partners with local medical clinics to distribute Ecofiltros to families presenting with waterborne illness. Ongoing surveys are conducted with families and replacement filters are distributed every two years.
Disaster Relief
CLEAN partners with Direct Relief to mobilize sustainable water filters, purification tablets and sanitation supplies and equipment to disaster areas worldwide.
Water Filters in Schools
CLEAN partners with Classrooms for Africa and Spouts of Water in Uganda and Pure Home Water in Ghana to implement sustainable water filters (as well as education for students, staff and families) in classrooms and communities in need.
COVID-19 Sanitation, Hygiene and PPE mobilization
CLEAN has always worked to equip communities worldwide with access to sanitation and hygiene but the current COVID-19 crisis has brought the importance of hygiene into stark reality across the globe and impacts us all.
CLEAN International is on-the-ground and working hard to equip our clinics and hospitals in need worldwide with hygiene and sanitation equipment and resources.
Tree Planting
CLEAN International helps recharge groundwater and alleviate the impacts of climate change through tree planting worldwide.
Water Conservation and Restoration
CLEAN International works worldwide in water scarce regions to recharge groundwater and conserve water through rain catchment, water saving technologies, lake restoration, tree planting, education and more.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
CLEAN International is dedicated to the eradication of waterborne illness and an end to the daily walk for water worldwide.
CLEAN International's programs align with and support the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal #6 of access to clean water and sanitation for everyone by 2030. CLEAN International addresses all elements of the SDG 6 from the protection and conservation of water and the environment to the need for millions around the world to have access to clean water and safe sanitation.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
CLEAN International works every day to:
1) protect the environment and conserve water,
2) educate others about the issue of a lack of access to clean water and sanitation, and
3) provide sustainable, affordable clean water and sanitation through community run programs and technologies.
To accomplish each of these strategies, CLEAN International first identifies the need and its location. Through interviews, data collection and partner organizations, CLEAN documents the regions of need and the barriers to access to clean water and sanitation for each community. Once the needs are identified, CLEAN International then identifies leaders within the community and partner organizations with whom to implement sustainable solutions. To be sustainable, technologies and programs must be needed and wanted by the community, able to be maintained, fixed and evaluated by the community and have a positive impact on community members and the environment.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
CLEAN International is fortunate to have a Board of Directors with decades of collective program management, fundraising and international public health knowledge and experience. In addition, CLEAN International is equipped with a team of mentors within the water and sanitation industries as well as business executives to ensure programs and technologies being implemented have positive and sustainable short and long-term impacts for communities worldwide and for the environment.
CLEAN International's vision of the eradication of waterborne illness and an end to the daily walk for water is helping to move the entire global sector forward toward vision achievement of SDG 6. We are thrilled to bring our experience and vision to the extremely important issue of clean, sustainable water and sanitation worldwide.
