Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Memorial Hospital Restoration Project
Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte was the first indigenous person to become a physician in the United States. Born in the Nebraska Territory in 1865, she was the youngest child of the last formal chief of the Omaha Tribe.
The Picotte Memorial Hospital in Walthill, Nebraska, was renamed after Dr. Susan’s death in honor of the work she did for her community. Since its construction, the hospital has also served as a nursing home, bakery, family residence and upholstery shop. At one time, rooms on the first floor housed a museum, and in 1993 the site was declared a National Historic Landmark. Today, however, the building sits empty and ready for repurposing. The project is about to embark on its third and final phase: the restoration of the hospital interior. By following the U.S. Department of the Interior Standards for Historic Preservation, the Picotte Center will be able to take advantage of the Historic Tax Credit program.

Walk to the Rock
Located on the south edge of the North Platte River Valley, four miles from Bayard, Nebraska, Chimney Rock is a sandstone spire rising from a base of sandstone and siltstone, extending 350 feet from the base to the top.
Chimney Rock was a key stop on the Oregon Trail, and its iconic shape is found on everything from company logos to Nebraska’s state quarter. Walk to the Rock will both enhance patrons’ experience of visiting Chimney Rock as a National Historic Site and allow the preservation of native habitat in a key area of the North Platte River Valley. Finally, it will ensure that this landscape is preserved for future generations. This is an historic moment for Chimney Rock, and is rare opportunity to protect this remarkable resource while providing a recreational and educational component for all.
Pershing Mural Relocation
The Pershing Mural Preservation Committee and the Board of Trustees – Wyuka Historic Cemetery, jointly have announced a plan to place the historic Pershing Mural in the newly planned Wyuka Park area. Wyuka, encompassing approximately 100 acres between “O” and Vine Streets and nationally recognized as an historic site, has been a vital living piece of Nebraska and Lincoln’s history since its founding in the mid-19th century. It is considered a magnificent example of landscape architecture and design featuring statuary art and monumental architecture, the Nebraska State Holocaust Memorial, and historic tributes to Lincoln families, Civil War veterans, and ordinary citizens. Wyuka was Lincoln’s first public park and the Trustees are excited to re-establish it and incorporate the Mural.
In this setting, the Mural’s 763,000 earth-toned tiles will each be visible elements of the massive 38′ x 140′ mural. The Mural depicts – literally and symbolically – our state’s cultural interests, di
Alkali Station
Alkali Station survives as a well-preserved archaeological site because, unlike most other sections of the Overland Trail, it has never been plowed. Remains of sod buildings, walls, and corrals that were raised at the site are all visible and a broad swath of historic trail ruts can be seen leading to and past the site. Because of its importance and integrity, Alkali Station has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation acquired this property to assure preservation of the site due to its importance in American’s pioneer history. The acquisition does create unavoidable obligations for on-going maintenance costs and debt involved in acquiring the site must be retired. You are invited to be a part of creating a legacy of historical significance by making a contribution to the Alkali Station fund.
