FHC- Making a better world!
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Family Health Care has provided health services and supportive care for vulnerable people in our community for more than thirty years. Wyandotte County has the lowest per capita income in the region and the highest proportion of uninsured low income individuals and families. FHC been awarded status as an FQHC Look-alike Health Center after meeting the rigorous requirements for the designation. Many of our patients have few other resources. A recent example is a woman who was beaten by her partner of twenty years and sustained multiple bruises and abrasions. He had forced her out of her home and she had walked through the rainy summer night (over twelve miles) to get to Family Health Care for help. FHC staff helped her clean up, fed her and helped her transition to a safer placement. Her care included not only xrays and medical treatment, but clean clothes, food and hugs.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Family Health Care
Founded in 1989, Family Health Care has provided family oriented medical services and social services including obstetrics, pediatrics, adolescent and adult medicine, geriatrics, palliative medicine, minor surgery and minor emergency care. On site laboratory, x ray facilities, hearing, vision and pulmonary testing, physical therapy, minor surgery unit, and colposcopic equipment is utilized. Individual and family counseling, disease specific and dietary education, social services assessments and referrals are available. Family Health Care leads our community's safety net clinics in providing health care (including prenatal care and deliveries) for mothers and their newborns. Through collaborations and by using physician extenders FHC provides more services with fewer providers than others in the metropolitan area. FHC provides expert HIV services as well as preventive PEP and PrEP care.
Maternal Options that Matter
Family Health Care provides a home and support for the Maternal Options that Matter program (https://swbfhc.org/prenatal-mom/), a collaboration with KU Dept of Family Medicine and Nurse-Midwifery Program to serve the pregnant women in Wyandotte County in order to improve prenatal care and outcomes- which are some of the lowest in the State of Kansas and in the Nation. Maternal Options that Matter is a collaboration between FHC and the University of Kansas Department of Family Medicine. Annually MOM provides services to approximately 200 women and their babies.
HIV Care
Since our founding, Family Health Care has an on-going commitment to provide medical services to people with HIV and to people at risk for developing HIV.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Family Health Care is continuing to expand services including medical care, dental care, behavioral health care and supportive services to low-income uninsured people of all ages and with all medical concerns. We define long-term success through the numbers served and through the impact on population health in Wyandotte County, Kansas.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
FHC has been improving our work and expanding our services through development and expansion of clinical services and supportive services such as social services, literacy support, legal support, etc. This requires a mixed strategy of development, personnel and appropriate collaborations with other services agencies.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
FHC has been working in our community for nearly thirty years providing care for people who often have no other alternatives for their health care. Over the years capacity has expanded from a crew of four to currently about seventy staff to provide an increasing array of services focusing on the health of vulnerable populations in Eastern Wyandotte County and those who otherwise fall through the cracks in local and regional services. FHC is a leading provider of HIV, Hepatitis, Diabetes, and other chronic disease care.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
During nearly thirty years FHC has developed into a respected health care provider for uninsured low-income people in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. The focus of caring for people with serious health concerns has led to FHC being the second largest provider of HIV care (including PEP and PrEP) in the metropolitan area and for many homeless and those living in extreme poverty.
