What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

At IDEA, we have a philosophy that Student Voice Matters. It is a belief shared by our client partners and those dedicated to a holistic view of learning in higher education. In order to get a complete picture of instruction, we insist that students’ voices be heard as they spend more time observing faculty than anyone else on campus. In order to get a complete view of advising programs, we need their feedback on what works and what doesn't. Student feedback strengthens our teaching, our advising, our programs, and our campuses - it is indisputable. But to do it right, we need to ask better questions to get better answers. We need to offer support and advice with research to support this philosophy.

Student Ratings of Instruction

The IDEA Paper series, begun in 1979, is one of IDEA’s most recognizable resources. IDEA Papers are a national forum for the publication of peer-reviewed articles pertaining to the general areas of teaching and learning, faculty evaluation, curriculum design, assessment, and administration in higher education.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

As a nonprofit organization, we have partnered since 1975 with colleges and universities across the country to reach the same goal — continuous individual and institutional improvement and achievement.

IDEA's goal is to improve learning in higher education through research, assessment and professional development and we do so in the following ways:

1) IDEA's Student Ratings of Instruction, Feedback for Administrators and Feedback for Chairs instruments are a core part of IDEA's mission. Each service offers targeted feedback for improving personal performance – while positively impacting the institution's processes and outcomes.

2) IDEA's research and papers are resources that support improved teaching and student learning.

3) IDEA's Impact Grants program fulfills our mission through direct financial support for practitioners engaged in the expansion of teaching and learning.

IDEA ability to improve student learning over the past four decades has relied on the following skills an abilities of our staff and partner organizations:

1) Continuously honing our assessment tools to address the changing higher education landscape.

2) Gathering expertise from all disciplines and audiences to inform our services, research and outreach.

3) Providing direct financial support for practitioners engaged in the expansion of teaching and learning.

True to our nonprofit mission of improving student learning in higher education through analytics, resources, and advice, we are supporting new knowledge in teaching, learning, and campus climate through our IDEA Impact Grants.

In 2016 we awarded more than $45K to six higher education institutions.

In 2017 we awarded more than $40K to six higher education institutions.

In 2018 we awarded more than $18K to two higher education institutions.
