What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Utah Symphony
Founded in 1940, the Utah Symphony performs more than 175 concerts each season and offers all Utahns easy access to world class live musical performances in the state’s top venues. Music Director Thierry Fischer has led the orchestra since 2009 in its home venue of Salt Lake City's Maurice Abravanel Hall. The orchestra has released over 100 recordings, and has embarked on seven international tours; on several national tours, including Carnegie Hall; and on three summer outdoor concert tours in the national parks and monuments of Utah.
Utah Opera
Since 1978, Utah Opera has provided Utah’s citizens with distinguished productions at the historic Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre that showcase emerging and established artists, celebrate traditional works, and champion the American operatic tradition. Utah Opera presents four full productions each season, with five performances of each opera. The company also owns and operates its full-time production studios for the construction, storage, and rental of sets and costumes, and manages a Resident Artist Program for the training of rising young vocal performers and pianists/accompanists.
Deer Valley Music Festival
The Deer Valley® Music Festival (DVMF) is Utah Symphony’s summer home in the mountain resort town of Park City, Utah. The 2023 festival marks the 19th season of providing chamber music, classical, and pops offerings in several venues: the Deer Valley Resort Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater, St. Mary’s Church, and salon events in downtown Park City and in private homes. The goal of the Deer Valley® Music Festival is to be renowned for consistently delivering high quality and musically diverse experiences in casual settings amid Utah’s glorious Wasatch Mountains.
Education & Community Engagement
Utah Symphony & Utah Opera provide extensive education programs that serve all Utah public and charter school students and teachers with events and activities designed in accordance with the state's curriculum standards in music and theatre. We reach all school districts along the Wasatch Front from Provo to Ogden (including all of Salt Lake County) annually, and districts in other areas of the state at least once every three to five years. Activities include orchestral concerts and opera presentations in the schools, coaching of young musicians by our artists, the 5th-Grade Concert Series at Maurice Abravanel Hall, original opera composition projects, opportunities to attend symphony and opera rehearsals, and more. In a typical year, over 100,000 Utah students and teachers participate in our school programming.
