What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Ceramics Studio Programs
In 2021 HCOA opened a new ceramics studio and classroom. The studio equipment includes 8 throwing wheels, electric kiln to cone 6, sab roller, extruder, and a clay recycling system. We currently present 5-week class series in hand building and wheel throwing from Kindergarten through adult, and open studio time for qualified potters.
MakerSpace
MakerSpace is a K-2 afterschool drop-in art program hosted at Fireweed Academy's K-2 campus. The program includes afterschool care Tuesday through Thursday, with art classes, play time, and a healthy snack.
Touring Performances
HCOA presents a range of touring performances at a variety of venues based around the academic calendar year. Many tours are presented in coordination with the Alaska Presenters' Consortium, making the most of block booking tours across Alaska. Venues vary, but include HCOA's gallery, the Mariner Theater, Homer Theater, and local churches. Recent guest performers include: Quarteto Nuevo, Irish Traditional Music, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dave Brubeck Quartet, the John Damberg Lating Jazz Quintet, and the Zodiac Trio. Tickets are discounted for HCOA members and youth.
Artist Support Programs
HCOA presents the annual Nutcracker Faire, held at Homer High School each December. This craft fair features only artisan-crafted goods made locally on the Kenai Peninsula, as well as local food vendors and ongoing performances by community members. Additionally, HCOA maintains a directory of local artists members, and presents workshops and roundtables for artist development.
