Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Every day, more than 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with cancer, which is the second leading cause of death in the US (1). For more than 100 years, radiation therapy has been a safe and effective cancer treatment (2), prescribed for nearly two-thirds of people diagnosed with cancer (3). Yet, radiation therapy is poorly understood, under resourced, and underutilized as a treatment for people living with cancer. (1) American Cancer Society.Cancer Facts & Figures 2024. Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) - the ASTRO Foundation - is accelerating the boldest and most innovative ideas in radiation therapy. ROI delivers vital resources to passionate investigators who are leading research to develop tools and discover solutions that will make a difference for people living with cancer.
As the only charity accelerating progress in radiation oncology to make a direct impact on people living with cancer, we believe that every person impacted by cancer should have access to the best radiation therapy to live a longer, healthier life.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
As the 501c3 foundation for the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), we are dedicated to advancing research and education to uncover resources and solutions that will enhance quality of life and outcomes for patients with cancer.
Our work is focused on accelerating bold and innovative ideas through our research grant program, publication awards, and educational resources.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our ability to accelerate the boldest and most innovative ideas comes from our volunteer leadership and the support received from the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
As a 501c3 charity, the Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI) is governed by volunteer leaders who make up our Board of Trustees and supported by volunteer members of ROI committees. These volunteers are health care professionals in the radiation oncology community who give their time and insights to drive our work forward.
ROI is the supporting foundation for ASTRO - the premier radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 10,000 members who are physicians, nurses, biologists, physicists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists and other health care professionals who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. These medical professionals, found at hospitals, cancer treatment centers and academic research facilities around the globe, make up the radiation therapy treatment teams that are critical in the fight against cancer.
