Starting in 1956, each year a boy and girl are chosen to be youth ambassadors for Hannibal representing Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. They stroll downtown on summer weekends, greet riverboats, attend civic functions and more. Due to the high demand for appearances, the program was expanded to include 1 official couple and 4 alternate couples. Seventh grade students sign up in the late winter and go through a competitive process of interviews, study and testing. the ten finalists then prepare their outfits, and the official couple is announced on Independance Day as part of the National Tom Sawyer Days event. They serve until the next couple is announced a year later.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The mission is fulfilled by the restoration and interpretation of several historic and reconstructed buildings in the City of Hannibal.
* The Mark Twain Boyhood Home - when young Samuel Clemons lived and played. His own experiences were the basis for some of his best known characters.
* The Boyhood Home Gift Shop - a WPA ear structure that served as a caretakers apartment and museum prior to the creation of the interpretive center.
* The Becky Thatcher House - The home of Laura Hawkins, the inspiration for Becky Thatcher
* The John M. Clemons Justice of the Peace Office - This building housed the office of Mark Twain's Father.
* Pilaster House/ Grant's Drug Store - This building once housed the Clemons family after John Clemons dies and the family was taken in by friends.

* The Interpretive Center - a repurposed building now houses admissions and exhibits about the Clemons Family.
* The Museum Gallery - a two story building that tells more about the career of Sam Clemons as a river pilot, newspaperman and author as well as exhibits dedicated several of his books.
* The Huck Finn House - A recreated building on the site of the house where Tom Blankenship lived. Tom was the inspiration for Huck Finn.

Eight buildings with exhibits are open year round closed only on four major holidays.
Hosting an annual teachers workshop that enables teachers to learn about Mark Twain and be better able to incorporate his writings and ideas into their lesson plans.
A quarterly newsletter is published.
Programs and exhibits are planned and implemented throughout the year.

The museum employs a professional staff that handles the management, restoration, financial and program aspects of operations. They are assisted by support staff that sell admission tickets and merchandise. There is considerable local support for programming and restoration projects which is aided by grants and fund raising campaigns.

The most recent restoration of the Pilaster House/Grants Drug store was completed in early 2020. This included a major stabilization of the building which was listed on the top ten endangered properties list. Being named to the list helped create awareness that aided in a capital campaign. New exhibits have been created to help tell more stories about the formative years for young Sam Clemons. The house reopened to the general public in the spring of 2020.

Behind the scenes the Fund Development Committee is working on expanding the development areas though encouraging planned giving to support long term projects and operational support.

The exhibits in the Mark Twain Museum Gallery will be reviewed and a plan for updating and replacing will be created.
