What we aim to solve

REACT primarily works as an extension of local Emergency Management and National Weather Service. Its primary purpose is dedicated to public safety in all types of situations. We also help with Heart Walk, Omaha Corporate Cup Run, Offutt Air Show, Corporate Cycling Challenge, various parades and many other events in a 40 mile radius. Although many of these events are non-emergency, we are able to help those who have emergency needs by providing radio contact with the event coordinators.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Heartland REACT is the home of the SKYWARN Weather Spotters who are “on-duty” 24 hours a day during severe weather season. Whenever severe weather is eminent for the area, the Spotter Network is activated by the National Weather Service through the Team’s Weather Officer. Within minutes of the initial call, the team is out and rolling to Watch-points throughout Douglas, Sarpy, and Saunders Counties. A REACT Spotter was the first to report the May, 1975 Tornado which enabled Civil Defense to sound the sirens soon enough to give citizens those extra few precious seconds to get to safety. Spotters put their lives on the line each and every time they go out.

Heartland REACT also has a Search and Rescue Unit ready to assist law enforcement agencies, a wintertime 4×4 patrol, and a bicycle safety unit all within its organization.

Presently, there are more than 50 active members of Heartland REACT who volunteer year around.

Press Release Here

Heartland REACT’s assistance was requested in an emergency situation to help relocate hundreds of Omaha residents living in life threatening conditions; including but not limited to: gas leaks, carbon monoxide threats, electrical problems, physical deterioration of the units, rodents and insects containing disease. The tenants include an estimated 175 children, and they may be forced to remain in the community centers in coming days until more permanent housing can be arranged.

The city initiated a mobilization not unlike that of a post-disaster relief plan.

Announcements from the event are recorded here: WOWT News and KETV

Data
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
