What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Backpack Program
Improper nourishment impairs a child’s ability to concentrate, makes them lethargic, causes them to act out and cause discipline problems, and severely hinders their academic performance. To help, teachers and administrators often turn to their own wallets to provide food for hungry students, but it is still not enough. The Federal School Lunch Program offers these children free or reduced pricing for breakfast and lunch during the week, but once school lets out for the weekend these children are often left wondering where their next meal will come from. The Food Bank of Delaware’s Backpack Program was created to help meet this need by providing children with the opportunity to eat over the weekend until they can return to school and receive meals. When they get back into the classroom at the beginning of the week, they are able to concentrate on their work and they have the energy to apply to their studies.
SNAP Education
The goal of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) education is to encourage participants to make healthy food choices within a limited budget and to prioritize foods acquired through emergency food systems. SNAP-Ed works with Food Bank partners to ensure that low-income Delawareans are receiving a variety of healthy foods when visiting local pantries. It is a constant struggle for food-insecure families to purchase enough food for a healthy and adequate diet. In order to stretch food dollars and keep stomachs from being empty, families often resort to purchasing inexpensive products with little nutritional value. The result is a diet high in calories, saturated fat, and added sugar, and low in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. This puts food insecure individuals at risk for becoming overweight and developing a wide range of related health issues.
WIC Education
The WIC Education portion of our Mobile WIC Clinic and Classroom program addresses the uses of all of the foods presented on the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) food package to pregnant and postpartum women and their young families, as well as nutrition topics concerning pregnant women, parents, and children through the age of five. Clients learn healthy food choices and how to plan and prepare nutritious meals for their families. All educational activities and materials have been developed using the 2015 Dietary guidelines, USDAs MyPlate.
Senior Nutrition Program - CSFP
The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a federal food program that is designed to improve the health of senior citizens. Food for the program is provided by the United States Department of Agricultures agency of Food and Nutrition Service.
$tand By Me
The mission of $tand By Me® is to provide Delawareans with a Personal Financial Coach and a toolkit to navigate the challenges leading to personal financial security. The program goal is to increase the capacity of Delawareans to understand and manage their finances in order to increase their financial stability and future economic opportunities.
The Delaware Financial Empowerment Partnership (DFEP), is a joint venture of the State of Delaware and the United Way of Delaware. We work together to combine resources and to create and implement an innovative package of financial empowerment services, called $tand By Me. We are also joined by a coalition of non-profit organizations, corporations, foundations and educational institutions to ensure that asset development goals like educational attainment or home ownership can be realized.
$tand By Me® financial empowerment centers are co-located within public agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses who embrace shared goals of reaching and serving Delawareans who want to take charge of their financial future.
Mobile Pantry Program
The Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry brings both shelf-stable and fresh foods to low-income Delawareans.
Through the program, up to 50 households access the pantry each day choosing foods best suited for their family! In addition, an education session may take place prior to distribution focusing on a variety of topics including nutrition, financial literacy, healthcare and more.
SNAP and WIC Outreach
Get Help Applying for Food Stamps (SNAP Benefits) The Food Bank of Delaware SNAP Outreach team provides application assistance to those interested in applying for benefits. We will determine your eligibility, do the application with you at a convenient and safe location, submit your documentation to social services, and let you know what to expect during the process moving forward.
Over the years, WIC enrollment and participation rates have steadily decreased due to lack of knowledge of eligibility and transportation barriers. In an effort to increase rates, WIC has partnered with the Food Bank of Delaware creating the WIC Outreach Program. The Food Bank of Delawares WIC Outreach Program offers WIC enrollment services at different community access points throughout the state of Delaware. Participants will be enrolled in WIC, see a nutritionist, and receive WIC benefits on site.
L.O.G.I.C. (Logistics, Operations, General Warehousing and Inventory Control)
L.O.G.I.C. (Logistics, Operations, General Warehousing and Inventory Control) is a 14-week training program, certified as a trade school by the Delaware Department of Education, that prepares students for careers in the warehousing/logistics industry. Under the guidance of an Operations Instructor, students train in the warehouses of the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark and Milford!

Students have the opportunity to receive:
Certified Logistics Associate and Certified Logistics Technician credentials from the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council. Click here to learn more about the certifications!

The Culinary School
The Culinary School is a 14-week training program, certified by the Delaware Department of Education, that prepares students for careers in the food service industry.
Under the guidance of Executive Chef Tim Hunter and Chef Instructor Tish Badamshin, students:
Train in the kitchen of the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark and Milford
Learn basic and high-end kitchen skills
Have the opportunity to become ServSafe certified
Receive a paid two-week work experience, job placement services, uniforms, textbook and knife.
Why The Culinary School?
FAST: Dont spend years in a program. Start a new career in just 14 weeks. Job placement for current students and alumni is available.
FREE: Student tuition and supplies are paid through generous scholarships and grants.
TRANSPORTATION: Free transportation is available to and from class. Gas cards are available for student drivers.
The Kitchen School
The Kitchen School represents a partnership between the Delaware Restaurant Association and the Food Bank in collaboration with teachers and counselors specializing in work with individuals with disabilities.
The 12-week curriculum has been developed to include group instruction and individualized training in our two Culinary School professional kitchens one in Newark and one in Milford.
Students spend 8 weeks at the Food Bank kitchen in Newark or Milford; after that, an additional four weeks is spent transitioning to permanent employment through on-site job coaching.
The Food Banks professional chef instructors and job coaches:
Train students to enter food-service workplaces
Teach students kitchen safety
Provide hands-on cooking skills training
Teach sanitation procedures
Provide students an opportunity to earn a ServSafe Food Handler Certification.
Staff also provide instruction in soft skills and employer expectations using national industry-based guidelines and curriculum.
