Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In the U.S. alone, nearly 10 billion farm animals annually endure anguished lives of unimaginable confinement and cruelty before being slaughtered for food at just a fraction of their natural lifespans. Their plight dwarfs the suffering of all other animals combined, yet they are the least protected under state and federal laws. While their rescue and refuge remains at the heart of Farm Sanctuary’s mission, the scope and gravity of the issues our work addresses extend well beyond animal welfare to address animal agriculture's devastating impact upon our environment, public health and social justice. Our work combats an industry where small farmers, slaughterhouse workers and indigenous communities suffer alongside animals as victims of the industry’s deeply entrenched injustices and cruelties.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Rescue and Refuge
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 as the nation’s first organization dedicated to the Rescue and Refuge of farmed animals. Hundreds reside permanently at our New York and California sanctuaries, while countless more are assisted through our Farm Animal Adoption Network, among the largest rescue and placement collaborative in North America. With nearly 10 billion farm animals annually in the U.S. alone enduring anguished lives of unimaginable confinement and cruelty before being slaughtered for food at just a fraction of their natural lifespans, we understand it is impossible to rescue our way out of a situation of this magnitude. At the same time, we recognize that each life saved and celebrated through Rescue and Refuge provides an opportunity for humanity to recognize farm animals as complex sentient, emotional creatures deserving of our respect and protection.
Education and Research
Our Education Programs further innovative learning initiatives designed to instill both knowledge and compassion in young learners by tackling interconnected issues such as animal welfare, climate change, and food insecurity. Recognizing that students sitting in classrooms today are tomorrow’s leaders in all spheres of public life, we believe education is key to creating real change in the world. Our multidisciplinary Animal Research and Ethology Programs employ science to inform animal care standards and practices throughout the sanctuary movement and beyond. Guided by a renowned advisory committee and research ethics guidelines, the information uncovered through our research can be used in support of movement-wide goals – to better educate ourselves, the public, companies and lawmakers – ultimately leveraging the unique power of sanctuaries to advance the welfare of farmed
animals at the systemic level.
Advocacy and Public Awareness
Today’s food systems work for nearly no one. At Farm Sanctuary, we are working across movements to fight the worst harms of animal agriculture and to build just, sustainable food systems that support animals, people and the planet. Our Advocacy and Public Awareness Programs engage the world in our work toward systemic change. We recognize that legislation can lessen the suffering of billions of animals with just one bill. We lead and support campaigns to secure the passage of federal and state laws protecting farmed animals from the cruelest abuses and confinement. We unite with coalition partners and activists across aligned interests to advance measures to incentivize an environmentally just and socially equitable food system. We engage global communities through our media and outreach efforts, increasingly bringing new awareness to the critical issues intersecting with farmed animal welfare.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Through our comprehensive programmatic initiatives, Farm Sanctuary works to bring about our vision for a future where sanctuary replaces exploitation for all animals, human and nonhuman.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Farm Sanctuary's Strategic Agenda is grounded in four principal priorities:
1) Achieving and maintaining organizational excellence;
2) Changing the way society views and treats farm animals;
3) Shifting agriculture to a just and sustainable food system; and
4) Increasing access to compassionate vegan living for all communities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Farm Sanctuary has taken purposeful steps in recent years to position our organization to more effectively carry out our mission. Commencing with the hire of a new chief executive officer in 2018, subsequent priorities have included significant strategic investments intended to strengthen our infrastructure and equip us with the capacity, expertise and experience to support the advancement of movement-wide goals. Our capacity to sustain and expand our impact is strengthened by the advantages of a successful and stable 35-year operating history; strong, engaged and skilled leadership and staff; ongoing processes of thoughtful internal and external planning, dialogue and critical self-assessment; and a robust community of allies, collaborators and partners across aligned movements.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In addition to establishing the nation’s first and largest sanctuary for farmed animals, we have set a number of precedents in the farmed animal protection movement, including:
o Pioneering the first undercover investigations at factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses
o Helping to secure passage of the first U.S. laws prohibiting cruel practices on factory farms
o Founding the largest farm animal rescue and placement network in North America
