What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Getting people to utilize bikes for everyday transportation is a great way to address the air quality and health issues that we face in Kern County. Bakersfield ranks highest in annual and 24-hour peak averages in fine particulates. Poor air quality directly effects the health of residents, and on unhealthy air days school children don't have recess outside. Utilizing a bike for transportation has the ability to reduce emissions and have the added benefit of providing an outlet for outside activity, which is part of a healthy lifestyle. The culture in and around Bakersfield does not fully embrace biking as an option for everyday transportation. Many residents see biking on as unsafe and inconvenient to use for transportation. Improvements to bicycle facility need to be made, such as a network of routes are needed in conjunction with enforcement, encouragement, education, and evaluation of projects to determine how to move forward and to catalyze more positive behavior changes.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Bike Kitchen

The Bike Kitchen is open to the public. We have tools needed for community members to work on their bicycles, and we have a mechanic on duty to assist as needed. Those in need of transportation that can't afford to by a bicycle can volunteer at the Bike Kitchen and earn a bicycle that has been refurbished.

Population(s) Served
Adults
Unemployed people

Bike Bakersfield works at the city, county and state level to encourage our governments to improve and increase infrastructure for bicyclists and all road users.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Our events throughout the year are largely responsible for shaping the public's perception of Bike Bakersfield. They are also a useful tool for getting people on their bicycles. Most of our events focus on both the social and transportation aspects of bicycling. The Full Moon Bike Ride, and the Sunday City Bike Ride are two examples of our events. The Full Moon Bike Ride has been a staple event for Bike Bakersfield for most of our history. Rides are held every full moon, and speeds are kept to just over 10 miles per hour with support provided for slower riders. The Sunday City Bike Ride was introduced in October 2012 as a compliment to the Full Moon Bike Ride. It takes place once a month and focuses on introducing on-street bicycling to participants as the routes generally avoid the bike path.

Population(s) Served
Families

We provide bike maintenance education, bike safety training, bicycles, and equipment to foster youth in need of a bike to use for transportation.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Students

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The goals for our organization are as follows:
- Establish a strong and consistent Adult Education Program centered around two classes, Confident City Cycling (a traffic skills and safety class), and Basic Bicycle Maintenance.
- Strengthen the presence and utilization of our two bike kitchens.
- Diversify our funding sources, through sponsorships, increased membership, and increased contracts.
- Grow our membership base to become a large financial contributor to the organization as well as a large platform for bicycle advocacy in the community.
- Assist the City and County in installing more bicycle infrastructure to encourage bicycling throughout the Bakersfield Metropolitan Area
- Achieve a bicycle modeshare of 5% for all trips in the area by 2025
- Provide low cost or free bikes, parts, and repair services to the community

Bike Bakersfield has been a non-profit since 2006. We strive to promote bicycling as a safe, fun and environmentally friendly means of everyday transportation, and have used a variety of avenues to do so and will continue these same efforts in the near future:
- Hold community bike rides that draw as many as 200 participants.
- Continue excellence with our Bike Kitchens which haves refurbished hundreds of bicycles throughout the years, and put them back on the streets for people who need the transportation.
- Provide education through classes, workshops, and literature to both children and adults.
- Advocate for increased bicycle infrastructure at the city, county and state level.
- Assist the City and County in attaining funding for more bicycle infrastructure.

Bike Bakersfield's internal and external strengths play pivotal roles in the success of this organization. Our organization has experienced success through the incorporation of a number of factors:
- A diverse staff with different skills, educational attainments, and passions all focused on improving biking in Bakersfield.
- Well established relationships with local government agencies giving us a platform to impact our road infrastructure.
- Connections with local private companies who support us financially as well as give us a platform to reach out to their employee base and the community at large.
- A balance of funding sources including grants, private donations, and membership dues solidifying our organizations financial stability.

Our progress towards our organizations goals is measured through examining the quality of our programs while monitoring quantitatively where we are in relation to our targets. Our near term goals are as follows:
- Annually add approximately 40 miles of bicycle infrastructure to the Bakersfield Metropolitan network.
- Increase our membership base and email list through outreach efforts such as events, community rides, and educational courses.
- Continue the excellence of our bicycle kitchens by distributing, repairing, and assisting in the repairs of bicycles for the community to help people get there bikes operational.

These past few year Bike Bakersfield made progress towards these goals by doing the following:
- Adding 50 miles of class II and III bicycle facilities to the Bakersfield Metropolitan Area
- Maintaining attendance on our monthly Full Moon Ride
- Getting our staff certified as League Cycling Instructors through the League of American Bicyclists and begin basic bike maintenance courses.
- Attending health fairs, farmers markets, and other community events and in doing so growing our membership base and connections with the community
- Hosting bicycle rodeos and kidical mass rides to teach our youth safe riding skills.

The impact of our work over the past few years has helped our organization grow tremendously. Through the course of our work we learned the importance of engaging the public and the opportunities which come from connecting with the community at large. Additionally we were encouraged to learn there are a number of funding mechanisms available to install bicycle infrastructure and are excited for the opportunity our organization has to assist both the City and County governments in growing their bicycle network. We also learned there are some adjustments which need to be made. While public outreach is beneficial we learned it is important to limit the number of free services we can offer in order to stay cost effective. At the same time we are aware that what is most important is being able to reach the community in order to improve bicycling, however too much focus on opportunities with minimal reward can become an obstacle for getting more productive work accomplished.

Other than fine tuning our outreach efforts we believe our time is being well spent and our short term goals as well as recent accomplishments are leading us towards our long term goals. By encouraging more people to ride, educating them on how to ride safely, and by building quality bicycle infrastructure we believe we can achieve a 5% mode share by 2025 and sustain our organization as an active member of this growing community.
