Nonprofit Open Admission Animal Shelter

HSHC is the municipal animal shelter for Harford County. We are an independent nonprofit that contracts with the Harford County Government to provide sheltering services for the County, and receive approximately 73% of our operating budget from the County Government. On average, we take in 3,500 animals a year, of all species, and regardless of medical or behavioral need. Animals come to us by way of owner surrender, stray animals found within Harford County, or by animal control in cases of abuse, neglect, hoarding, and dogfighting; as well as injured or ill wildlife. Through our shelter intervention programs, we work to prevent owner surrenders whenever it is in the best interest of the pet. We maintain the official lost and found pet registry for Harford County. We have thriving volunteer and foster programs, and a formal Humane Education program. In 2016 we moved into a brand new, 19,000 square foot state of the art facility. Since 2016 we have maintained an annual live release rate of 90% or more. We are not affiliated with and receive no operational funding from the Humane Society of the United States.
