Mission

Our mission is to provide vulnerable DC residents with comprehensive services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Our immediate goal is to provide necessary and compassionate services to residents of Washington, DC who do not have the resources to meet the basic needs of themselves and their families. Serving the poor since 1974, our programs are designed to comprehensively address the needs of those who face life in, or on the edge of, poverty. The organization has five programs and two locations, the NW Center in Shaw and the SE Center in Anacostia.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

All clients are low-income DC residents. Bread for the City has five major program areas: Food Program: Distributes a three-day supply of groceries to hungry people. We feed over 4,500 households each month, predominately elderly, disabled or families with children.
Clothing Program: Distributes seasonally appropriate casual and professional clothing.
Medical Program: Offers primary medical care for children and adults. The clinic provides job physicals, medications, lab tests and referrals.
Social Services Program: Provides a wide range of counseling, case management and representative payee services. Staff helps clients apply for public benefits like SSI or Food Stamps, and helps clients access a wide range of services available throughout the city.
Legal Program: Attorneys represent and advise clients in three areas of law: landlord-tenant, public benefits, and family law.
