Center for Excellence in Education
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
U.S. students do not rank at the top of academic performance as compared to their global peers. The Center’s programs help to assure U.S. competitiveness in science and technology, allowing students to excel to become leaders at corporations, academia, private institutions, and government agencies.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Research Science Institute (RSI)
Research Science Institute (RSI) is a six-week summer STEM experience held in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). RSI combines on-campus coursework in theory with off-campus STEM research for young scholars who have completed comparable to the 11th grade. RSI is provided free of cost to all students competitively selected to attend.
At RSI participants experience the entire research cycle. Students begin with one week of seminars highlighting current research topics. Students read current literature in a field, draft and execute a detailed research plan, and deliver oral and written reports about their findings. The heart of RSI is the five-week research internship where students conduct projects under the guidance of scientists and researchers.
To date, nearly 3,000 scholars, representing all U.S. states and more than 55 nations, have attended the program.
USA Biolympiad
The USA Biolympiad (USABO) is the premiere high school biology competition in the U.S., enriching the life science education of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. USABO offers motivation and skills training to take students beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness with rich online resources. Four rounds of competition: the Open Exam available to all students nationwide; Semifinal Exam open to the top 500 or 10% Open Exam scorers; National Finals for the top 20 Finalists to participate in a residential training program; International Biology Olympiad (IBO) where top scoring four students represent the U.S. as the USA Biolympiad Team at the IBO competition for teams from 75 countries.
Teacher Enrichment Program
CEE’ s Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP) focuses on best practices, resources and exposure to the breadth and depth of scientific discovery often not available to rural and urban high school teachers and their students. TEP offers both in-person opportunities to connect and learn from STEM professionals as well as a variety of online STEM resources for the classroom: Bite of Science, Lab Bench, and Public/Private Partnerships. TEP events and resources are provided for teachers in multiple states. All TEP events and online resources are cost-free to teachers for access and use in the classroom.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
CEE programs are nationally and internationally recognized for providing opportunities at no cost to some of the greatest young minds in the U.S. and internationally. These opportunities allow them to excel as the leaders for next generation corporations, academia, private institutions, and governmental agencies.
The Center's programs help to assure U.S. competitiveness in science and technology, and to further international collaboration among leaders of the international community. CEE challenges students and assists them on a longterm basis to become the creators, inventors, scientists, and leaders of the 21st century.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Center for Excellence in Education was founded to identify and nurture U.S. high school and university scholars to become the scientific and technological leaders of the future. CEE has pursued this mission with a singular focus, and today the Center sponsors some of the most respected scientific enrichment programs anywhere in the world. Along with its flagship program, the Research Science Institute (RSI), CEE administers the USA Biolympiad (USABO), an extensive alumni program to support highly accomplished science students as they launch their careers, and the Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP) for STEM teachers' professional development, to assure a future talented and diverse U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Founded in 1983, CEE offers many years of experience of providing world class programs without charging a fee for participation. The organization has a staff of 20 and an active Board of Trustees.
CEE also has an alumni base that touts major accomplishments, and superior quality faculty in its programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Research Science Institute (RSI) has over 3000 alumni. Approximately 80% of alumni remain in STEM based careers. The overwhelming majority of RSI alumni attend Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, and the California Institute of Technology. RSI alumni have included Intel Science Talent Search (STS) semifinalists, finalists, and first place winners. RSI alumni are among Calvin Coolidge Scholars, Field Medalists, Siemens Award winners, Simon Investigators, and Rhodes and Marshall Scholars, among many other prizes and achievements.
The USA Biolympiad (USABO) is the premiere high school biology competition in the United States, enriching the life science education of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. More than 100,000 high school students have participated in the annual USABO since 2002. USABO alumni are Biological Science graduates of top tier universities and medical schools, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford, Cornell, Washington University in St. Louis, and the Mayo Medical School. USABO alumni have earned Goldwater Scholarships, NOAA Hollings Scholarships, American Heart Association Undergraduate Fellowships, National Science Foundation Fellowships, Sloan Research Fellowships, the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, the Linen Prize in Chinese, and the Clara Levillain Prize. They have also been selected as Churchill Scholars, Marshall Scholars, Pew Biomedical Scholars, and Searle Scholars as well as for Burroughs Wellcome Fund Grants, Macmillan Grants, and National Institute of Health Grants.
To date, 3,282 teachers from 1,356 schools have participated in the Teacher Enrichment Program (TEP), impacting an estimated 585,401 students in TEP states. Ninety-three percent of participants have shared information and resources from TEP with their students and/or their colleagues.
CEE has partnered with 56 countries and was the first U.S. organization to receive high school students from the People’s Republic of China, India, and the Balkan and Baltic nations. RSI programs are in Bulgaria, China, India, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.
Among those goals to be accomplished: an endowment to fully support CEE programs, and visibility to the public for understanding the importance for support of top academic STEM scholars.
CEE's programs are highly scalable; additional funds will allow more qualified students to experience CEE to become the innovators and scientific leaders of tomorrow.
