Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal, as it has always been, is to continue to make progress in protecting our
liberties despite the rhetoric of fear driving much of the public discourse and the efforts of some to defend discrimination in the name of either their liberty or our security.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our goals are simple. We aim to make real progress in protecting LGBTQ Virginians from discrimination on the job and in housing or public accommodations. We want to defeat any bills in the 2016 General Assembly session that would limit the positive impact of new federal rules on Virginians or empower government officials to discriminate against the people they serve based on the officials' personal religious beliefs.
In addition, while we're challenging a discriminatory policy adopted by the Gloucester Schools that denies our transgender client the right to live with respect and dignity as the boy he is, the Liberty Counsel (a self-described conservative Christian organization) has sued the Fairfax County school system seeking to set aside its policy protecting students and teachers from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. We are advocating at the state and local levels for inclusive policies that assure full equality for all Virginians.
In light of another cycle of anti-immigrant sentiment, three legislators have threatened to
introduce legislation in 2016 that would block use of any public funds to facilitate the resettlement of any Syrian refugees in Virginia. We will push back as state and local legislative bodies seek to implement policies that subject immigrants to discrimination
and policies of fear.
While support for abortion access is rising nationally, we're facing continued regulatory pressure on abortion providers at the state and local levels, and unrelenting efforts to stigmatize women who choose abortion. Paradoxically, pregnant women and girls continue to face discrimination on the job and at school. We will stand up for women against discriminatory legislation and rules designed solely to shut off access to legal abortion, and against policies that discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace and pregnant girls at school.
Communities of color continue to experience biased policing, and criminal justice reform is much talked about but has yet to produce concrete forward progress. The coalitions building around smart justice are becoming increasingly diverse, bringing together social justice and conservative voices in pursuit of an end to policies and practices that impose high costs on taxpayers but do little to keep us safe. We are pushing for smart justice changes in our laws that reduce the number of people who are jailed as felons for minor offenses.
Our report on the deployment of body-worn cameras published last fall found little consistency among local and state policies governing their use and much about which to be concerned if we are to achieve the goal of transparency and accountability in policing.
