Mission

The Rockville Chapter of the IWLA (Rockville Chapter) was founded in 1933 as an affiliate of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA). Committed to a common-sense approach toward protecting our natural heritage and enjoying the great outdoors, the Rockville Chapters mission is to conserve, maintain, protect and restore the soil, forest, water, and other natural resources of the United States of America and other lands; to promote means and opportunities for the education of the public with respect to such resources and their enjoyment and wholesome utilization thereof.

Environmental Education Programs

* Rockville Chapter volunteers run youth conservation educational programs for ages 5-12, kayaking instruction and float trips for youth and families and BB Gun and air rifle programs.

* The Rockville Chapter sponsors a campership for a high school student to attend the state's Natural Resources Careers Camp and 6 Thos. W. Fisher Conservation Education Scholarships for students from Montgomery County, MD.

*Our Chapter provides meeting space to scouting groups, the local chapters of Trout Unlimited and TCAF, as well as camping opportunities for several local youth organizations.

* A new tool in agriculture and conservation is the use of drones, and the Rockville Chapter offers a drone safety course with practice sessions.

*Save Our Streams (SOS): Our quarterly educational programs are open to the public. We monitor Great Seneca Creek using IWLAs SOS protocols. Results are posted to the Clean Water Hub.

*Wood Duck Conservation Program: members clean, monitor and maintain over 70 Wood Duck boxes along the Potomac River in Montgomery County, MD, and share our results with the Maryland Wood Duck Initiative.

*American Chestnut orchard: members support the Maryland Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation in their efforts towards restoring American Chestnut trees to the wild.

*Bi-monthly clean-ups of the adjacent Waring Station Road.

*National Hunting and Fishing Day: members share their expertise at this open house event designed to increase public awareness of the connection between hunting, angling, and conservation.

*The Rockville Chapters diverse property offers opportunity for fishing, hunting, hiking, photography and wildlife studies.

*Hunting is an element of conservation that helps keep the land and wildlife healthy by balancing wildlife populations with available habitat. The Rockville Chapter offers educational opportunities for youth and adults to learn about gun safety.

*As part of the American Tree Farm system, the Rockville Chapter works to manage invasive species on our property. Our member beekeepers maintain their honeybee hives in the apiary, producing honey as a forest product available to our Rockville Chapter members.

*The Rockville Chapter supports the use of Maryland native plants in landscapes, and maintains several pollinator gardens on our property.
