Brendan Sailing Program - Annapolis

Since 1985, Annapolis, MD has been the primary home for the Brendan Sailing Program. Throughout this time, hundreds of campers have participated in our Annapolis Sessions, which have contributed to a foundation of building confidence and social skills through sailing.

Our Annapolis beach based program is led by US Sailing certified Instructors who work with individual students to discover their individual learning style. The Brendan Curriculum covers an introduction to the sport of sailing that includes the parts of the boat, maneuvers, navigation, and the Rules of the Road that follows the National On-Water Standards. Our Instructors use a hands on approach to teach sailing and seamanship, with emphasis on building confidence and mastering basic sailing skills. On the final day of both sessions, parents are invited to take a sail with their camper to show off the skills they have acquired.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth
People with learning disabilities

Starting in 2005, the Brendan Sailing Program expanded its reach in helping children with learning differences. Thanks to the support of St. Mary's College of Maryland, in St. Mary's City, MD, and our partnership with Spirit of America we were able to add another dimension to our sailing program and its overall goal of building confidence and social skills through sailing.

Our St. Mary's program introduces safe instruction for not only sailing, but incorporates the concepts of paddle sports and powerboating as well. Led by US Sailing and US Powerboating certified instructors, the Brendan Curriculum covers an introduction to the sport of sailing that includes the parts of the boat, maneuvers, navigation, and the Rules of the Road that follows the National On-Water Standards. Participants are given first hand experience in all domains of recreational boating, including power and human propelled craft. When not on the water, campers have the option of a variety of recreational and team building opportunities to promote self-confidence and esteem.

Overnight session participants get the opportunity to stay on-site in St. Mary's College student housing, take meals in the dining hall, and build confidence through the independence they experience while staying on campus. No sailing or boating experience is necessary for either of the St. Mary's Day or Overnight Sessions. Day Campers experience the same curriculum as Overnight Campers, and we prefer those wanting to participate in the Overnight Session to be 15+ years of age.

Brendan Sailing, a popular and longstanding summer camp operating in Annapolis for more than 30 years, is coming to DC as an after-school program!Launching at DC Sail near the Nationals Park and Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro, Brendan Sailing teaches youth from a wide range of learning differences (Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Auditory Processing Disorder, ADHD, ODD, etc.) how to sail in a non-competitive environment and use sailing as a foundation for building life skills, self-confidence, and social ability.
