What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Food Production and Consumption
United Poultry Concerns investigates, documents and campaigns on all issues involving the use of chickens, turkeys, ducks and other domestic fowl in industrial agriculture. Our Website has a comprehensive section devoted to INDUSTRY. Our key campaign activities include exposure of the egg industry practice of starving hens known as FORCED MOLTING (https://www.upc-online.org/molting/), the poultry industry practice of DEBEAKING (https://www.upc-online.org/debeaking/), POULTRY SLAUGHTER (https://www.upc-online.org/slaughter/), LIVE POULTRY MARKETS (https://www.upc-online.org/livemarkets/) , and BACKYARD CHICKEN KEEPING (https://www.upc-online.org/backyard/).
Our Website includes a section on DIET comprising ethics, health, and recipes, and a section on the ENVIRONMENT including our Fact Sheets, “Fouling the Environment” and “Avian Influenza: What You Need to Know.” See https://www.upc-online.org/environment .
Science
United Poultry Concerns researches and publishes information on the use of domestic fowl in biomedical, pharmaceutical, toxicological, and agricultural research. In 2011 UPC researched and published a report about experimental research on Decompression in chicken slaughter plants.

Education
United Poultry Concerns is leading successful campaigns against chicken slaughter projects in middle schools and high schools in the U.S. Thus far we have investigated, exposed, and halted chicken slaughter projects at schools in Florida, Idaho, New York, and Kansas. We assist students, parents and teachers by writing letters to school administrators and to local news media as well as by publishing alerts to our members urging them to contact school officials to protest putting butcher knives in students’ hands to slaughter chickens.

Entertainment
United Poultry Concerns actively campaigns against cockfighting. We assist local municipalities to curb cockfighting and prosecute cockfighters by providing information to law enforcement, testimony at hearings, and media publicity. In August-September 2011, UPC worked successfully with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services to pass a law limiting the number of roosters a person can legally keep in order to curb cockfighting in the county.

Human Companionship Situations
United Poultry Concerns maintains a fulltime sanctuary for chickens, turkeys
and ducks on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. All of our birds are rescued
from abuse, neglect and homelessness. We invite people to visit our
sanctuary, and we use our sanctuary skills to educate people about the
nature and needs of these birds and the cruelty of factory farming,
cockfighting and other abuses.
