Mission

Americans for Medical Progress is dedicated to protecting society's investment in biomedical research. Our programs focus on public outreach that builds understanding and appreciation for necessary and humane animal research. We also provide vital news, information and analysis to biomedical research stakeholders to ensure they have the resources they need to deflect campaigns that threaten the future of medical progress.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Animals are an essential part of advancing medicine and science. Today, there are many misconceptions about alternatives to animals in research and the environment in which these animals live. The problem our organization is working to address is to ensure that every member of the public knows that without animals in research, medical advancements will not occur and that when animals are needed, an entire profession of researchers, veterinarians, and animal care teams are committed to ensuring optimal environments and compassionate care for these essential animals. In addition, research community continues to seek alternatives to animals when possible and are continually working to improve animal welfare when animal are needed for studies that aim to improve human and animal health.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Raising Voices, Saving Lives

Our goal is to nurture and equip the next generation of research advocates.  Through our websites, social media channels and speaking engagements, AMP connects students, scientsts, advocates and others in a nationwide network to share information, commentary and outreach resources.  AMP collaborates with state, national and international biomedical research organizations to maximize resources and develop a tapestry of services that will enhance the entire biomedical research community.

Population(s) Served

The Michael D. Hayre Fellowship in Public Outreach, established by Americans for Medical Progress in 2008, promotes peer education about animal research among students and young adults aged 18-30.  Named in memory of AMP's former Chairman, Michael D. Hayre, DVM, DACLAM, the Fellowship provides support for peer outreach and education projects in the United States. The AMP/Hayre Fellowship program seeks to find and support college students and young adults in the United States who have a passion to educate others about the necessary and humane use of laboratory animals in the pursuit of treatments and cures.

AMP News Service provides the biomedical research community with timely and relevant news, analysis, competitive intelligence and public affairs counsel regarding animal rights issues that have the potential to hinder the discovery and development of medicines, vaccines and treatments.  The free email  AMP News Service Digest  (readership: 35,000) is our response to the critical need within the biomedical research community for fast and reliable information about the tactics, campaigns, personalities, and trends of the activist opposition to biomedical research. Often, AMP News Service provides protective intelligence for scientists - early warning of specific animal rights threats against research.  AMP also offers specifically tailored news and private consultative services for numerous research stakeholders, including medical centers, patient advocacy groups, research institutions and universities.

Population(s) Served

The Love, Care, Progress video series provides an inside look at research involving animals. These moving stories serve as conversation starters for honest dialogue about the irreplaceable benefits of animal studies and the high standards of care these amazing creatures receive.

Population(s) Served

Come See Our World (CSOW) provides a window into the world of life changing research involving animals. The public is invited to see the animals that are integral to medical progress. Advancements in human and animal health would not be possible without these important animals, as well as their caregivers, researchers, non-animal models, and human volunteers. The website shares true stories and images of real animals in research settings. The site will continually grow as more pictures and articles are added. People are encouraged to let us know what specific animal or area of study they are curious about so we can move it to the top of our list as we add new content.

Population(s) Served

Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) is an initiative committed to educating students and the public on the importance of biomedical research and the humane use of animals. BRAD is held every year on the 3rd Thursday in April. Veterinary schools, medical schools, research institutions, and others around the world will be participating and celebrating at their respective institutions. www.bradglobal.org

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our organization is aiming to ensure a knowledgeable public who can base their opinions and decisions around animals needed for research on truth rather than misinformation. It is imperative that Americans understand the consequences of banning the use of animals in research before there are reliable alternatives. It is also important to keep in mind that the aim of basic research is to understand how systems work or how diseases processes occur. There is still so much unknown about living systems so alternatives to these types of studies are not feasible in the near future.

We are working to ensure a public that is knowledge about why animals are needed in research and how they really live through programs that help individuals and institutions communicate effectively about their work with animals in research.

We are capable in carrying out our strategies through our diverse board which brings a wealth of expertise and perspectives from all types of research institutions as well as roles in research. In addition, our staff brings education and our outreach experience, communications and security experience, as well as perspectives from our targeted audience, the public.
