Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Choice USA wants students and young activists to have access to the tools and skills they need to organize others and fight for reproductive freedom. The Pro-Choice Organizing Academy is a set of trainings and programs developed by Choice USA to inspire, develop and support emerging pro-choice leaders.

1. The Gloria Steinem Leadership Institute is an intensive five-day training that helps emerging leaders develop the skills necessary to mobilize their communities for reproductive freedom.

Each year, more than 50 students and young pro-choice activists are selected for the program. Participants from across the country are flown to Washington, D.C., for this all-expense-paid opportunity.

GSLI is a unique experience where these new members of the movement can:

-- Increase their knowledge of reproductive choice issues
-- Develop leadership skills
-- Learn from top pro-choice leaders and social change activists, including pro-choice religious leaders and abortion providers
-- Network with other young women and men committed to reproductive freedom

2. Choice GROWs

Choice USA partners with the United States Student Association to bring Grassroots Organizing Weekends to students on college campuses in the spring and fall.

Choice GROW seminars use scenarios pulled straight from today's headlines to prepare student activists to promote and defend reproductive choice.

In a series of discussions and simulations, young leaders learn the fine points of forming and executing effective strategies. These include:

-- Building strong coalitions among various student groups
-- Setting short-term, mid-range, and long-term goals
-- Identifying allies, constituents and opposition
-- Evaluating tactics and strategies
-- Understanding recruitment methods and mobilizing constituents
-- Measuring success

Choice GROW seminars help students put their beliefs into action and make them aware of opportunities of organizing as a career. This ensures that young activists continue to participate in the choice movement, and creates long-term social change.

3. Voter Action Strategy Training

Building and demonstrating our collective power is a way youth and students can push decision-makers to respond to our demands.

The Voter Action Strategy Training (VAST) teaches young activists how to run voter registration, voter education, and get-out-the-vote efforts that build electoral power to pressure decision-makers and win policy changes. VASTs are held by request for youth and student organizations, and last an afternoon.

4. Specific Issue Strategy Sessions

Specific Issue Strategy Sessions are workshops customized for the campaigns of local organizations. Choice USA sends professional organizers to meet with our member groups and help them form winning strategies that improve access to reproductive health services in their communities.
