Grid Integration

The SEPA Grid Integration Pathway enables carbon-free energy to be easily integrated with positive impact to affordability, equity, safety, security, reliability, resilience and customer satisfaction. Clean energy resources continue to provide value system-wide, as well as for individual consumers. The grid must be sufficiently flexible to accommodate wind, solar, electric vehicles, energy storage and other new clean resources, whatever their size and wherever they’re deployed, without degrading reliability and the other valuable attributes of the system.

Population(s) Served

The SEPA Regulatory and Business Innovation pathway facilitates sustainable utility business models and the state regulatory processes needed to achieve a carbon-free energy future. Utilities and regulators must innovate to capture the opportunities in this transition.

Utilities are deploying new resources and advanced technologies, and developing new products and services – on their own and in partnership with others – to meet increasing customer expectations and changing public policy objectives. To succeed, utilities need new business models and processes that exploit this environment, and regulation must align utility incentives with customer and public policy objectives

Accelerating Utility Transformation to a Carbon-Free, Modern Grid
Renewables, climate considerations, natural disasters, technology advancements and changing customer preferences are driving the U.S. electricity industry transformation.

To meet this challenge, utilities around the country are taking actions today to lead the transition to a carbon-free energy system by 2050. SEPA created an honest assessment to gauge utility progress.

Inform your path to a modern, carbon-free grid by understanding how utilities are pursuing this transformation.

The Utility Transformation Challenge includes:

The Utility Carbon Reduction Tracker
The Utility Transformation Survey (launched April 2020)
The Utility Transformation Profile (available now)

Smoothing the Transition to Electric
The SEPA Electrification pathway facilitates the transition of the nation’s vehicles and buildings to be powered by carbon-free electricity. Electrification creates value for society, customers and utilities, providing environmental, cost, convenience, and grid benefits. Thoughtful planning for the growth and management of these new electric loads is critical to successfully minimize system impacts while creating equitable customer and grid value.
