Mission

The Samaritan Community was established by Memorial Episcopal Church in the late '60's as a response to the needs of families and individuals in crisis, primarily providing food. Since then, we have provided emergency assistance to thousands of families and individuals. The staff and volunteers are committed to helping those we serve take control of their lives. We accomplish this through counseling, emergency food and financial assistance. In addition, we help people access the services of government agencies, hospitals, employers and schools through advocacy and referral. We also receive referrals from these same sources, asking for our help for those that they cannot serve. We accept and need volunteers and contributions from all sources to meet the ever-increasing requests for our services.

The Samaritan Community's services include:

An Emergency Food Pantry, staffed by volunteers, provides free food to over 5000 people each year.

Crisis Intervention Counseling handles over 75 cases per month. We help with rent and utilities assistance, medical needs, transportation to a new job and job required clothing.

Financial Counseling provides the means for families to achieve self-sufficiency through financial planning.

Employment Counseling and Referral is a mainstay of our counseling services. 150 individuals were assisted with their job search last year.

Group Counseling is for individuals committed to mutual support for personal growth. Sessions address issues such as self-esteem, life skills and sobriety maintenance.

The Samaritan Residence provides a family environment for individuals committed to the values of mutual respect and community living.
