What we aim to solve
We are in need of "radical breakthroughs" for the benefit of humanity. We need to motivate individuals, companies and organizations across all disciplines to develop innovative ideas and technologies that help solve the grand challenges that restrict humanity's progress.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
IBM Watson AI XPRIZE
The $5 million IBM Watson AI XPRIZE is a global competition challenging teams to develop and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with powerful AI technologies to tackle the world’s grand challenges.
ANA AVATAR XPRIZE
The $10M ANA Avatar XPRIZE is a four-year global competition focused on the development of an Avatar System that will transport a human’s sense, actions, and presence to a remote location in real time, leading to a more connected world.
NRG | COSIA CARBON XPRIZE
The $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE is a global competition to develop breakthrough technologies that will convert CO₂ emissions from power plants and industrial facilities into valuable products like building materials, alternative fuels and other items that we use every day.
Global Learning XPRIZE
The $15 million Global Learning XPRIZE challenged teams from around the world to develop open-source, scalable software that empowers children to teach themselves basic reading, writing and arithmetic within 15 months.
Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE
The $7 million Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation is a global competition challenging teams to develop mobile applications for existing smart devices that result in the greatest increase in literacy skills among participating adult learners in just 12 months.
Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE
The $7 million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE is a global competition challenging teams to advance deep sea technologies for autonomous, fast, high-resolution ocean exploration.
Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition
The $1 million Adult Literacy XPRIZE Communities Competition challenges communities and organizations across the country to empower adults with low literacy skills to download and use a free, effective, convenient and private mobile learning tool. XPRIZE will provide the educational apps – you just have to get them into the hands of learners.
Rainforest XPRIZE
The Rainforest XPRIZE will accelerate the innovation of autonomous technologies needed for biodiversity assessment and will enhance our understanding of rainforest ecosystems by using rapid data integration to provide new wisdom about the forest as well as inspire new investment and exploration. The Rainforest XPRIZE will reveal the true potential of the standing forest, accelerating the development of new, just, and sustainable bioeconomies.
XPRIZE Pandemic Alliance
To accelerate the world’s response to the greatest challenge we face today, XPRIZE is launching the XPRIZE Pandemic Alliance, powered by the XPRIZE Data Collaborative, a powerful platform for collaboration, combining data, AI tools, and bleeding edge insights and ideas with a community of innovators on the fringe.
Comprised of a collection of exclusive datasets and AI capabilities spanning multiple domains, the XPRIZE Data Collaborative democratizes access to data and the tools needed to develop solutions, thus enabling teams and collaborators to use these valuable assets to solve the world’s most immediate challenges. Our goal is to incentivize and capture the collective intelligence and wisdom of the global community to identify and develop solutions based on data, beginning with the global pandemic we face today and extending further within the domains of health, economy, environment, and equity for all .

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We want to inspire and guide innovators to create breakthroughs enabling a world of abundance -- a world where every man, woman and child can access all the energy, clean drinking water, shelter, education and healthcare they require.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We use large-scale global incentive competitions to crowdsource solutions to the world's grand challenges.
We believe that solutions can come from anyone, anywhere. Scientists, engineers, academics, entrepreneurs and other innovators with new ideas from all over the world are invited to form teams and compete to win the prize. Rather than throw money at a problem, we incentivize the solution and challenge the world to solve it.
The incentive prize contest has existed for centuries. From the inception of the Longitude prize in 1714, through the Orteig prize that compelled Charles Lindbergh to fly across the Atlantic, prizes have ignited passions and brought about breakthroughs that no one thought possible.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Visioneering is XPRIZE’s main vehicle for designing prizes that solve humanity’s Grand Challenges. By tapping into the genius of the crowd, and our global brain trust of philanthropists and innovators, we significantly increase the likelihood that our XPRIZEs will catalyze breakthroughs that generate a 10x impact in the world.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1994, XPRIZE has designed and launched seventeen prizes in the domain areas of Space, Oceans, Learning, Health, Energy, Environment, Transportation, Safety and Robotics.
Our first XPRIZE, the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE for private spaceflight, spurred an industry and created exponential breakthroughs. Since then we have launched over $140 million in prize purses, including the $15 million Global Learning XPRIZE, the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, and the $1.4 million Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup XPRIZE.
Each of these prizes has created an industry-changing technology that brings us closer to a better, safer, more sustainable world.
