Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Black Georgetown Cemeteries Project
In partnership with Mt. Zion-Female Union Band Historic Memorial Park Foundation, the project seeks to develop an immersive, original music-theatre work supported by crucial research, bringing new “life after death” to the complex, little known history of Black Georgetown. Through stories of the residents of the adjacent Mt. Zion and Female Union Band Society cemeteries, we will showcase the obscured story of our city’s history: urban slavery; African-American benevolent organizations and their lesser known role in DC’s Underground Railroad; significant Black leaders including Charles Turner (“the Mayor of Black Georgetown”), and the complex relationships of Black and White inhabitants who lived, worked, and worshipped together.
