Mission

Our mission is to help improve the lives of people in Africa and Asia who bear the greatest burden of poverty. We bypass illiteracy, geographical isolation and inadequate infrastructure to bring vital programs to information-starved communities through our award-winning digital broadcast and multimedia services. First Voice International is a catalyst and facilitator for the exchange of local knowledge and information. We provide a forum for the sharing of ideas, best practices and solutions to common problems, using a wide range of appropriate information and communications technologies (ICTs). Our programs are "first voice," produced from locally produced and locally relevant content collected from African and Asian civil society organizations and the communities they serve. We believe that accurate and relevant information and knowledge building are important prerequisites for sustainable development. Our goal is to give communities that have previously been unheard, a voice in today's global society.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Africa Learning Channel
Launched in December 1999, the Africa Learning Channel (ALC) is collective information service dedicated exclusively to noncommercial, open access, educational and social development programming. It broadcasts ?first voice? programs developed from content produced locally by African community broadcasters, nongovernmental organizations, media agencies, and other community-based organizations.
The ALC is dedicated to effecting change and promoting peace and prosperity in Africa. It is a forum for Africans to talk to each other continent-wide, from village to village and compound to compound, sharing ideas, best practices and solutions to common problems. It gives voice to populations that have not been heard, and empowers them with the knowledge they need to participate in the new global village.
To date, approximately 55.5 million people in 51 African countries have listened at least once to an ALC program on topics such as HIV/AIDS, good governance, youth development, gender, micro-enterprise, food security, environment, agriculture, and English as a Second Language.

The Multimedia Service
Since 2000, First Voice International has been providing a cost-effective and reliable mechanism for the distribution of multimedia data to target audiences in Africa. In 2002, the Multimedia Service (MMS) began broadcasting to Asia and the Pacific, transmitting information on food security, HIV/AIDS and other health issues, governance, disaster preparedness, and teacher training, etc.
The service supports people throughout Africa and Asia for whom information is essential resource for the successful implementation of their vocations. These include teachers, health workers, doctors and nurses, meteorologists and rural extension workers, local government officers, and community development workers, to name a few. They rely on the MMS for access to multimedia (web-based text, graphics and audio) data in regions where Internet access is not available, unreliable or prohibitively expensive.
