Mission

Brainfood uses food as a tool to build life and job skills with youth in a fun and creative setting. Through culinary-related activities, we strive to expand cognitive skills, encourage creativity, foster self-reliance and empower youth as resources in their own community. Founded on the belief that food is an invaluable means to reach people, create community, and affect change, Brainfood uses it to strengthen the confidence and broaden the vision of participants, both in and out of the kitchen. Brainfood creates a safe haven, providing youth with a locus of social support and activities that promote a sense of achievement.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Brainfood students spend their first year with us participating in Brainfood After School, gaining exposure to new ideas, skills and opportunities through fun group activities. Brainfood After School meets two afternoons a week for exciting and educational food-focused activities. The program year is divided into 4 modules: Introduction to Cooking, Kitchens and the Food Industry; Food Science and Nutrition; Technical Kitchen Skills; and Food Issues, Culture and Politics. The program structure involves interactive classroom activity, hands-on cooking instruction, field trips, guest speakers, student presentations, and a graduation event designed and executed by students. Additionally, there is the Brainfood Summer Institute designed to engage previous Brainfood After School students in a more intense and in-depth exploration of food and their communities. Students spend an increased amount of time in the kitchen while also completing community service projects at other food focused non-profits in the community. This gives them the opportunity to give back to their community while learning important job skills not available to many of their peers.
