What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
1. The ?Catching Up? Project assists African refugee students advance at their own pace ? both educationally, and in their cultural adjustment ? through individualized tutoring and mentoring.
2. AIRF Study Circles is a pilot project at Blair High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. It utilizes the process of the national Study Circles Program to involve students, parents and teachers in dialog for mutual understanding and increased student performance.
3. The African Council of Elders Mediation Project supports African-Centered mediation and conflict resolution approaches for refugees in schools, homes, neighborhoods, Worship and work places through referrals from legal systems.
4. The African Cultural Sensitivity Competency Training Program designed to provide African Cultural knowledge, cultural awareness, and skills to work effectively with the African community. Training is provided to care givers, employers, Law Enforcement, School Educators, Hospital personnel and to Africans themselves.
5. We provide English as a second language (ESL) classes with one of our partners, the Charles W Gilchrist Center for Cultural Diversity.
Catching Up Program
AIRF
seeks to address the critical issues of mental, identity,
socio-cultural, and linguistic challenges faced by newly arrived
Africans. Adolescent refugees and older youths are particularly
affected by the process and this impacts negatively on academic
performance and relationships in school, the community, and at home.
Through individual mentoring and African Clubs in middle and high
schools, AIRF's Catching Up Program has been providing young Africans
the guidance and support to overcome obstacles to mediation within
the family, school system, and adjustment to American culture since
2002. For many children, formal education was interrupted during
flight and resettlement and many lack language and academic skills,
so Catching Up provides academic support. The clubs also counsel
students through their daily challenges and provide an outlet for
cultural expression and pride in being African. AIRF’s target
population includes populations from over 35 African countries, and
intercultural conflict resolution has been a programmatic strength.
Catching Up participants have repeatedly shown academic improvements
and many go on to four year colleges. AIRF also reaches youth through
annual conferences, which celebrate African culture, showcase youth
accomplishments, and give students a chance to voice their
experiences to the community at-large.
