DC SCORES
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We envision a DC where every child – no matter their family income – experiences the joys of childhood: sports, arts, service, and being part of a team. Where every child – no matter their family circumstances – is empowered to find academic success and grow into an emotionally and physically healthy teen and adult. Where every neighborhood supports and celebrates its children and their accomplishments on and off the playing field.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
DC SCORES
DC SCORES operates from 3:30-5:30 PM five days per week for elementary schools and three days per week in middle schools. The program follows a school-based model for after-school programming by hiring and training four teachers (“SCORE Corps”) from each school to administer the writing and soccer curriculum, which combines academic enrichment modules, health and nutrition lessons, project planning templates, and readily usable soccer practice plans that incorporate team building and leadership activities. By incorporating soccer, poetry and service-learning into an after-school program, DC SCORES students benefit from the physical activity of soccer practice and games, the self-expression poetry offers them, greater connection with their communities, and closer bonds with their teachers.
Each school year, elementary students participate in over 24 weeks of programming that combines soccer and health education two days per week, poetry and service-learning two days per week, and one day is reserved for inter-school soccer games. At the middle school level, we combine soccer and poetry or service-learning all on one programming day. In addition to daily programming, students, coaches and families participate in several city-wide events throughout the school year that showcase and celebrate our students’ work with DC SCORES in a fun, positive environment. Our events include a Fall Frenzy and Jamboree! (city-wide soccer tournaments), poetry readings at Starbucks, and the annual Poetry Slam!, a spoken word competition for all DC SCORES students.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
DC SCORES helps thousands of low-income kids succeed on the playing field, in school, and in life.
DC SCORES' goals are to tackle the many very real impacts of a life of poverty on a child: a lack of extracurricular enrichment, a lack of adult mentors, and a lack of fitness opportunities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
DC SCORES' school-based, team-based, whole child programming — delivered through free after-school programs and summer camps facilitated by trained youth development professionals — accomplishes this by intentionally integrating soccer, poetry, and service-learning to help low-income 3rd-8th graders throughout the District build physical fitness, find their voice, improve their literacy, increase school engagement, and strengthen ties to their community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
DC SCORES' office staff is small but incredibly dedicated, and we run our program for 2,000 DC youth by hiring and training motivated DC public school teachers to run the program at their schools, thus providing each student with direct access to a trusted mentor.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
DC SCORES has served more than 9,000 low-income DC children since 1994. DCPS teacher -- as well as Teach for America alumna, soccer player, and poet -- Julie Kennedy founded DC SCORES to meet the needs of a group of 15 girls with little to do after school. She realized that bonds between teammates built on the soccer field forged a supportive community for poetry workshops -- which, in turn, built literacy skills and a forum for self-expression. The development of leadership skills through healthy competition empowered students to act as agents of change in their communities through service-learning projects. Twenty-one years later, DC SCORES provides year-round expanded learning programs for 2,000 3rd-8th graders (half boys, half girls) each year at Title I schools across the city in DC neighborhoods characterized by entrenched poverty. DC SCORES recently completed a growth phase which nearly doubled our student body, in recognition of unmet need, but still has a waiting list of more than 10 schools and a vision to serve all children in the District in need of a safe, supportive and stable after-school environment. In 1999, DC SCORES began spinning off affiliate sites around the country. To date, 14 affiliates are now connected by a national umbrella, America SCORES, serving more than 10,000 at-risk children annually.
