Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Joshua Academy Preschool Cooked-from-Scratch lunch program
Access to nourishing food is one key factor in the growth of healthy children. In Evansville and its surrounding communities, nearly 25% of children live with food insecurity while 41% of children do not have access to fresh produce on a daily basis. When all children are assured of nutritious meals that include fresh produce, we are contributing to the health and well-being of our most precious community members – while assuring equal opportunity for brain and cognitive function, and physical health, leading to a vibrant community populated with productive teens and adults.
Urban Seeds is proposing a Pilot Program for a Cooked-from-Scratch lunch offering at the Joshua Academy Preschool. Currently these children, aged 2.5 – 5, bring lunch from home. Often their meals and snacks are deficient in nutritional value, reflective of family socioeconomics. Many studies validate that when preschool children gain access to cooked-from-scratch meals that include fresh produce, there are successes gained in learning capacity, behavioral measurements, and an overall decrease in illness/missed school days. This program will enhance the learning and care environment that JA Preschool provides to its students, adding to the high-quality child development while ensuring that nutrition is upheld to the same standard that is exemplified in the other aspects of the school. Urban Seeds believes that all of our community’s children deserve to be well nourished.
