Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Anti-Hunger Initiatives
In partnership with Feeding America Southwest Virginia and the USDA, Y student volunteers provide healthy snacks to all of the participants at the after-school programs. Prices Fork Elementary School has the added benefit of receiving a full dinner for their participants because they have a greater than 50% free/reduced lunch population; we know many of the children do not have a meal when they return home. Additionally, VT and NRCC students provided a pop-up food site each day of the week over the summer at two mobile home communities whose demographics point to poverty and unreliable access to food at home. Childcare participants on DSS subsidy will be able to benefit from the food sources connected to the Y’s anti-hunger initiatives.
In direct response to the COVID-19 Crisis, the YMCA at Virginia Tech introduced "Meals On Main" a program which feeds children under 18 meals and snacks seven days a week. Since our first distribution we have supplied more than 8,600 meals to 2,604 children and continue to serve twice weekly.
Y Student Programs
Works with hundreds of students each year to take them into to region and fill community needs such as tutoring, after school programs for at-need children, visiting with seniors, environmental programs, and more.
