What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Publications and Disseminating Scientific Research
American Fisheries Society programs include publication of four peer-reviewed scientific journals on fisheries science, aquaculture, and fisheries management; Fisheries magazine; and books on fisheries science and management.
Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program
The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is a paid summer internship and mentoring program for high school students. Selected students known as “Hutton Scholars,” are matched and mentored by a fisheries professional in their local area to enjoy a hands-on fisheries science experience in a marine and/or freshwater setting. Hutton Scholars receive a $4,000 award as well as valuable work experience in an exciting and rewarding field.
Student and Professional Development
Our mission to strengthen the profession of fisheries includes ongoing workforce training and continuing education. AFS offers free and low-cost professional education for students, young professionals, and conservation and fisheries professionals. The programs are offered in-person and online. Programs range from reviews on scientific advancements to the field to skills identified as in-demand by employers and graduate programs. Fundraising in this area allows AFS to provide high quality, innovative, and impactful continuing education that is affordable and accessible to fisheries scientists and technicians.
Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society
This annual meeting is the premiere gathering place for fisheries professionals. Each year, between 1,500 and 3,000 fisheries scientists and managers from government agencies, universities, and industry communicate through oral presentations, poster displays, continuing education workshops, business meetings, and informal socials on topics varying from biology to policy. Additionally, the meeting provides opportunities for networking, mentoring, and skills training for students and professionals.
