CARS is a volunteer rescue squad with over 150 members. We are a member of the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads assigned to District I. CARS operates seven advanced life ambulances (medic units), three advanced life support quick response cars (zone cars), one heavy rescue trucks (squad), a water rescue truck with two boats, a technical rescue truck, a collapse rescue trailer, a command car, and a mass causality incident truck.

Population(s) Served
Adults

We teach a free community CPR class at least once a month for citizens. Cardiovascular disease is very common -- it's the #1 killer in US and in our community. Heart attacks can happen suddenly, especially if someone has one or more risk factors such as high blood pressure, overweight, poor diet, smoking, etc.

CPR buys time for the victim.
Once the heart stops beating, brain death can occur in 4 to 6 minutes. Performing CPR provides oxygen to the brain and other vital organs to give the victim the best chance of full recovery after EMS takes over. If immediate CPR is given and a defibrillator is used within the first few minutes following sudden cardiac arrest, the person's chance of survival doubles.
