Mission

The Virginia Native Plant Society is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the native plants of Virginia and their habitats, in order to sustain for generations to come the integrity of the Commonwealth’s rich natural heritage of ecosystems and biodiversity for purposes of enjoyment, enlightenment, sustainable use, and our own very survival. To this end, we advocate and follow practices that will conserve our natural endowment, and we discourage and combat practices that will endanger or destroy it. We are committed to do all we can to slow the accelerating conversion of natural landscape to built and planted landscape and to reduce its damage to natural ecosystems. In everything it does the Virginia Native Plant Society emphasizes respect for the natural environment.

Virginia Native Plant Society

Members and the public benefit from the educational programs offered; quarterly newsletter; website and social media educational outreach; an annual educational workshop; publications: Va. Wildflower of the Year; Invasive Alien Plant Program; Wildflower, Fern and Tree Checklists; field trips in Virginia and occasionally to other states and Canada; Calendar of native plant events around the state; Virginia Native Plant Registry of outstanding natural native plants ecosystems; education about legislative and other environmental issues; chapters sponsor plant sales of chapter propagated native plants and native plant garden tours of members; an Annual Meeting of members to conduct the official business of the society, elections and reports, is coupled with speakers and field trips and is hosted each year by a different chapter of the twelve organized across Virginia. Participation in environmental and educational booths and exhibits at events around the state. Fund academic research relating to native plants and their natural communities.
