What we aim to solve
Ability Center of Virginia (formerly Cerebral Palsy of Virginia) was established in April 1984 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with the goal to provide programs and services to support the needs of children and adults with cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.
Programs and services emphasize inclusion, independence, social skills and positive relationships between all individuals, regardless of their abilities. Ability Center of Virginia delivers programs and services to children and adults with disabilities throughout Hampton Roads, the Peninsula, Virginia's Eastern Shore and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently over 520 families receive programs and services from the organization. Many families with a family member that has a disability do not have the financial resources to pay for the programs but no one is ever turned away.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Ability Days
Held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 10 am - 4 pm (Sept-May), adults with disabilities participate in community outings, arts and crafts, games, movies, bowling and other activities of daily living.
The goal is to create a more independent living environment for the adult, as well as better inclusion in community activities. In addition, caregivers are able to benefit from a time of respite while the program is in session.
A service fee of $45 per day is charged, with scholarship assistance available.
ArtWorks
The ArtWorks Program is a dynamic group of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities creating original artwork. Staff and skilled volunteers work with participants to teach and assist in adapting techniques to create.
One-of-a-kind, hand-stamped cards
created with love by individuals with disabilities in Hampton Roads.
In addition to creating Paintings on Canvas, participants construct mixed media pieces—including hand-stamped Greeting Cards, Gift Tags and much more! Thanks to an inkind gift, we have more than 5,000 stamps to create unique card designs for any occasion.
The ArtWorks program provides participants with a great sense of pride, independence and acceptance in our community, while simultaneously giving them an outlet for self-expression.
These custom cards are available for purchase throughout the year at The Royal Chocolate, Sugar Plum Bakery, Hickory Trading, and Pawsnickety Pets.
Social & Recreational Weekend Activities
Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans has a Disability and 65% don't have any social interaction outside of their home? Many families who have a disabled family member do not have the financial resources to go to the movies, bowling, to a museum or theme park and most never have an opportunity to do activities together as family.
Ability Center of Virginia provides families of children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to participate in many community activities. Provided are tickets to community activities such as the Circus, Broadway Productions, movies and bowling. Some are free, others require a small service fee to cover a portion of the purchase price.
This program allows families a day of fun and entertainment at a low cost.
Camp Ability
Each summer over 100 children, teens, and adults from Hampton Roads, the Peninsula, and Virginia's Eastern Shore attend Camp Ability. Camp Ability is held for seven weeks over June, July, and August. During the week of camp, participants arrive at the center Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM to participate in activities for a total of 30 hours of enriching activity each week. Each week of camp is designated by age group and theme. Activities include community outings, arts and crafts, bowling, movies, and much more.
Each camper is paired with a teen volunteer to be their buddy for their week at Camp Ability. Our thriving youth volunteer program promotes community education and cultivates a spirit of understanding and acceptance toward people with disabilities.
There is a $50 non-refundable registration fee. Camp is $350 per camper per week.
