Programs and results
What we aim to solve
On Our Own's goal is to provide community health to all those we serve. Every part of our program helps citizens move into sustainable recovery from mental health challenges and toward their own unique form of self-sufficiency. They strive to develop their own potential. The local need for our program is clearly evident by ongoing local and national research.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Individual Growth Program
Our Individual Growth Program provides the foundation for all our recovery efforts. It provides a structure for give and take where members assume personal responsibility and a sense of ownership in the Center. The program helps individuals move to increasing health and well-being. It begins with careful attention given to each person who enters our doors. On Our Own welcomes anyone who comes seeking support in their recovery from mental illness and co-occurring problems. Through the Growth Program’s Individual Well-Being Plans, members empower themselves by identifying well-being objectives, setting action plans, following or changing plans as needed and receiving coaching and support. The weekly Goals Group provides group support on particularly challenging or important objectives. Custom designed groups and referrals to community partners provide resources for achieving objectives.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
On Our Own has an annual budget of approximately $450,000. We do much with little, however we know we could do so much more if given the opportunity. Our projected revenues are on target to meet the FY2019 budget. The proposed revenues and expenses which will vary for the FY2020 budget are a proposed increase for operating and staffing expenses. Our employee insurance rates went up by a significant amount this year, and we will be fundraising and applying for proposals more than we ever have in the past. Our entire staff is being paid a living wage with insurance and our members can receive excellent support from staff who are less financially stressed. We know that with growth, our expenses will be higher; our utilities, our supplies, and the wear and tear on our building will increase.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The basic structure that ensure our track record of successful programs are: our processes for strategic and operational planning; the project management approach that assures accountability, our Total Quality Management approach, which sets measurable, behavioral objectives, action plans, and continuous improvement; and our dedication to being a learning organization, which results in highly trained, supported, and state certified staff (who are members in recovery). These processes are evidence-based best practices. OOO's mission for 26 years still guides our annual all-staff-and-Board Strategic Planning retreat. We examine the current external and internal environment and evaluate and update our objectives for the next three years. Since our objectives are all measurable, we identify and delete completed objectives. We adjust and add objectives and identify the individual responsible for leading a team(s) to accomplish each objective. While these objectives guide operations, staff and board respond quickly to new opportunities that further our mission. Weekly staff and monthly Board meetings keep everyone aware of progress and needs for adjustments. Thus, we are systematic but agile.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
All donations/grants will be blended with other funding, as it has been in the past. All our programs are funded by several sources, including: 1) our service contracts from Region Ten, Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, Western State Hospital, and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services 2) private grants: Bama Works, CACF, the Horton Family Fund, the Charlottesville Friends Meeting 3) private individual donors- doubled in two years). This is part of our Board's Comprehensive Funding Plan.
We collaborate with over 30 agencies from four citizen support systems in our community: a) Community Mental Health Wellness Coalition and UVA; b) Homeless Reduction TJA Coalition for the Homeless; c) Education and Job supporters e.g. Virginia Workforce Center Cville; and d) criminal justice e.g. TJA Criminal Justice Board.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As of December 2016, we received the grant money to update all of computers, laptops, and printers. We also were able to install data drops to all offices, a server for central data storage and security. This will help us improve our data collection process including securing confidential information and accurate reporting. This is important to those who currently fund us and potential funders in the future.
We also have hired a full-time skilled Programs and Personal Advocate Coordinator. She has a background in running non-profit organizations including fundraising and development of successful programs.
We were successful in 2019 in developing and installing the software for the data collection. We had done this by hand since our conception. Having a digital system significantly increases our ability for accurate data reporting.
