The Stonewall Brigade Museum

The Stonewall Brigade Museum houses a rare collection of artifacts and archival materials related to the 116th Infantry Regiment, the 29th Infantry Division and the U. S. Army.
The origins of the 116th Infantry Regiment are traced back to the early 1740s, when it was part of the Colonial Virginia Militia. Repeatedly drawing its strength from Citizen-Soldiers, the fabled unit saw action in the French and Indian Wars, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the American Civil War earning the name “The Stonewall Brigade”, and the First and Second World Wars, The Cold War and the Global War on Terror. Vision: We will be an accredited, American regimental museum and history education center of excellence.
Mission: The museum collects, preserves, and interprets objects and records to educate people about the history, heritage, and legacy of the American citizen soldier.

Population(s) Served

The Foundation’s education and travel programs are for Students and Adults and we provide resources for Educators in our region.
We host and lead history tours to Battlefields and historic sites in Normandy and Verdun, France and will add the Shenandoah Valley in 2019.
Our volunteers present and exhibit at State sponsored teacher workshops each year and we plan to host one local workshop each year. These highlight the teacher resources we have and how our Virginia connected history can be used to fulfill nearly all of Virginias Standards Of Learning in social studies.
We also travel to or host community groups in the Museum such as scouts and DAR/SAR chapters to tell the story of selfless service thru the history of our citizen soldiers.

Population(s) Served

We support an annual reunion conference and banquet for veterans, current members of the regiment, families and descendants, and their guests. We host an annual Veterans 5K Race that is open to the community and provide facilities and resources for Post 116 of the 29th Division Association, Inc. to conduct its programs. These bring our generations of citizens soldiers and their families together with the larger community to help pass the heritage, history and legacy each year.
