CancerLINC Information and Services
CancerLINC provides education, assistance and referral to legal, financial and community resources. This support enables cancer patients to sustain themselves and their families by dealing with the non-medical issues surrounding diagnosis and treatment. Support is individual and provided with care, compassion and respect. Legal and financial counseling are provided at no charge to approximately 91% of CancerLINC's clients. Clients over income guidelines who are not eligible to receive free services are offered referral to legal and financial professionals on a for-fee basis; social services are provided at no charge. In addition, CancerLINC provides educational opportunities for cancer patients. Outreach and education helps to reach more patients in need and enables them to be more effective advocates on their own behalf.
Medical Legal Partnership at Massey Cancer Center
CancerLINC is a partner in the Medical Legal Partnership-Richmond or (MLP). This collaboration with VCU Massey Cancer Center was initiated in July of 2011. The MLP has revolutionized the way patient care is viewed and handled at Massey Cancer Center. According to the National Center for Medical-Legal Partnerships, MLP “is a health care delivery model that improves the health and well-being of low-income and other vulnerable populations by addressing unmet legal needs and removing legal barriers that impede health.” The MLP at Massey called the MLP-Richmond works with social workers, nurses, doctors and other health professionals to identify socio-economic barriers to health that may be resolved with legal advice or intervention. This program provides free on-site legal assistance and referrals to volunteer attorneys who will assist qualifying patients pro bono. This innovative program provides assistance for a number of issues impacting health, including estate planning, insurance denials, employment discrimination, custody arrangements and disability appeals.
Cycle of Life
A program to help cancer patients and their families with end of life assistance. Many cancer patients do not have the legal documents necessary to assist their families when they pass away. CancerLINC works with the social workers, doctors, nurses, clergy and other healthcare professionals to ensure that cancer patients have the necessary wills, powers of attorney, or advanced medical directives that they need to give them peace of mind that their wishes are legally documented.
Life Planning Clinics
CancerLINC conducts life planning clinics on a regular basis for cancer patients with Capital One legal counsel and other local corporate partners. These clinics allow 10-15 patients and family members to get their estate planning needs conveniently completed within a couple of hours.
Education for Cancer Patients
CancerLINC provides educational offerings for cancer patients. Information provided is varied and includes topics such as financial budgeting & planning, community resources, life planning documentation and much more.
