A Measure of Excellence

aka Manassas Chorale & Greater Manassas Children's Choir   |   Manassas, VA   |  manassaschorale.org

Mission

The Manassas Chorale is dedicated to bringing the highest quality vocal music to our community as the official choral group in residence at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, as well as through performances at smaller venues throughout our area. Our mission is to: 1) Provide an opportunity for singers to maintain and to improve their musical skills and to enjoy singing. 2) Present for public entertainment and personal enrichment programs of high quality vocal music. 3) Promote greater appreciation and enjoyment of good music, both classical and modern, for Manassas and the greater Northern Virginia area.

Notes from the nonprofit

The Manassas Chorale has met the goals outlined in our Strategic Plan. A new two-year Strategic Plan for 2024-2026 will be used to assess the continuing progress of pandemic recovery, the expansion of current programs, and the implementation of new policies.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Concerts

We present four major concerts each season, in October, December, March, and May. Musical styles vary from sacred to secular, from traditional Americana to more culturally and ethnically diverse pieces, from classical masterworks to Broadway show tunes. In addition, we perform at various local venues throughout the year, including many events in Old Town Manassas, local retirement homes and assisted living facilities, and area churches, civic groups, and museums. The Chorale has been asked to perform at groundbreakings and dedications, receptions, and sporting events. We also perform every winter at the historic Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg. In recent years, the Chorale has sung at the Washington National Cathedral and Constitution Hall in Washington DC, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City, and two European tours, one to Germany and France to sing for American military families and at American World War II cemeteries and one to Ireland, Wales, and England to sing in world-famous cathedrals.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Since 1999, the Manassas Chorale has offered Voices United, an annual 2-day workshop and concert open to anyone in the community from high school age through retirement. Since music for Voices United is appropriate for church use, this community outreach is especially valuable to all church music directors and choir members. The workshop is led by a nationally known clinician/conductor/composer, which means Voices United provides an exceptional music education experience to the community. This year, 41 area churches and choral groups were represented. Three generations of one family were among the singers and several parent/daughter or son combinations spanned the generation gap. About 150 singers participate in this event each year.

Since 2007, the Chorale has sponsored more than 30 "Concerts with a Cause.” For these concerts, singers and audience members have donated needed items to charities including Youth for Tomorrow, SERVE, Haymarket Food Bank, BARN Transitional Housing, Prince William County Senior Center, Matthew’s Center for Visual Learning, Operation Homefront, and the Prince William Medical Center Pediatric Ward. "Concerts with a Cause” appeals to the hearts of audience members and has allowed the Chorale to give back to the community. Miller Toyota furnished new vehicles that were parked in front of the Hylton Performing Arts Center before performances in order to collect donations of food and supplies. In addition, the Chorale collects hotel-size toiletries at each rehearsal and delivers a steady supply of these much-needed items to SERVE.

Adults

The Greater Manassas Children's Choir (GMCC) is an educational and performance opportunity for singers in grades 2-8 (with unchanged voices). GMCC is a richly diverse group of singers from a variety of backgrounds. Sponsored by the Manassas Chorale, singers are divided into younger and older groups and rehearse from September through May, with concerts in December and May. Directors and accompanists are professional musicians.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Manassas Chorale, the official choral group in residence at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, brings a variety of quality music, both classical and contemporary, to Manassas and the surrounding area. The Chorale seeks “A Measure of Excellence” in each performance, challenging singers and instrumentalists to continually present concerts of the highest artistic quality.

The Manassas Chorale’s Strategic Plan defines our focus and establishes specific, measurable goals to ensure continued success.

Regular review of the Strategic Plan is vital to the Manassas Chorale’s success, as well as an end-of-the-year review of all financial records. In addition, end-of-year surveys of the membership are used to evaluate goals and improve artistic quality.

The Manassas Chorale has completed 28 years of uninterrupted service by bringing quality music to the greater Manassas area, providing opportunities for singers to improve and maintain their musical skills, and supporting the arts in the community, as well as many local charities. Successful programs such as the Greater Manassas Children's Choir and the annual Voices United Workshop and Concert have become integral to the quality of life in the community.
