What we aim to solve New!

Like all communities, Blacksburg, VA and surrounding portions of Montgomery County, VA need high-quality pre-hospital emergency medical services to ensure health and safety. In addition, the wilderness portions of our community encourage outdoor activities which create a need for our technical rescue division who provide services such as wilderness search and rescue, cave rescue, water rescue, etc.

The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad’s primary is to ensure residents of our community feel safe and secure and have access to high-quality pre-hospital emergency and technical rescue services.

Blacksburg Rescue uses a highly motivated team of all-volunteer medical and technical rescue professionals to provide 24/7/365 in-house coverage to our community at the Advanced Life Support level. We leverage community support and donations which allow us to provide this service without billing our patients, meaning people will call us without having to worry about their ability to avoid our care.

Our organizations has over 150 active volunteers, all trained and certified to meet or exceed state and federal standards. These include EMT’s, Paramedics, and even physicians. We have six advanced life support ambulances as well as technical rescue and support vehicles to provide care and transport for ill or injured people. Our technical rescue team consists of highly trained experts in all aspects of technical rescue including wilderness search and rescue, cave rescue, swiftwater & dive rescue, confined space, trench collapse, structure collapse, vehicle extrication, vertical rescue, etc.

We monitor several performance measures, both operationally such as response/reaction time/call coverage but also with clinical measures with our peer-run quality assurance committee. We do this through electronic integration with our CAD system, incident report records, and system metrics. We compare these to local and national benchmarks.

The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad has shown consistent progress over the past several years. In 2017, we were recognized with the Governor’s Award for Outstanding EMS Organization for Virginia. We strive for excellence and will continue to work with our membership and community partners to advance our skills and improve our effectiveness as we work towards our mission.

In order to support nonprofits and gain valuable insight for the sector, GuideStar worked with D5—a five-year initiative to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in philanthropy—in creating a questionnaire. This section is a voluntary questionnaire that empowers organizations to share information on the demographics of who works in and leads organizations. To protect the identity of individuals, we do not display sexual orientation or disability information for organizations with fewer than 15 staff. Any values displayed in this section are percentages of the total number of individuals in each category (e.g. 20% of all Board members for X organization are female).
